Welcome to Better Than Average Tutoring, your local Peer Tutoring agency in Montgomery, Ala. We specialize in assisting K-12 students in building confidence across foundational constructs covered in the classroom, homework, and test preparation. To date, we've proudly earned the title of a Top Tutoring Center for two consecutive years, having conducted over 10,000 tutoring sessions and amassed 600,000 hours of tutoring time. BTA was founded by LJ Walker during his eleventh-grade year at a local high school, with the primary goal of building confidence and increasing test scores.

As we continue to expand, we are excited to invite more passionate individuals to join our team as peer tutors, provided they meet the criteria outlined below.

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Part-Time Reading Specialist to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a passion for education, expertise in literacy development, and a commitment to fostering a love for reading in students. As a Reading Specialist, you will play a crucial role in enhancing student reading performance and confidence, thereby laying the foundation for the overall success of our program.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Individualized Reading Instruction: Provide targeted and personalized reading instruction to students based on their individual needs, utilizing evidence-based strategies and assessment tools.
  • Collaborative Project Development: Work collaboratively with other tutors and staff to develop projects that enhance the reading skills of students while fostering a positive and engaging learning environment.
  • Progress Monitoring: Conduct regular assessments to gauge students' reading proficiency and track progress over time. Adjust instructional strategies accordingly to meet the evolving needs of each student.
  • Initiative Promotion: Foster a love for reading by implementing strategies that encourage students to take the initiative to read independently. Create an atmosphere where reading is seen as enjoyable and rewarding.
  • Parent and Teacher Communication: Maintain open communication with parents and teachers to provide updates on students' progress, share insights into effective reading strategies, and offer guidance on how to support continued growth at home.

Expected Outcomes:

  • Increased Enjoyment of Reading: Students demonstrate a genuine enjoyment of reading, taking the initiative to engage in independent reading activities.
  • Improved Proficiency: Measureable increases in students' reading proficiency as evidenced by initial and ongoing assessments.
  • Observable Impact: Parents, teachers, and Better Than Average staff notice a significant difference in students' reading abilities, highlighting the success of the program.
  • Scalable Intervention Model: Develop and implement a replicable Reading Intervention process, ensuring its adaptability across multiple locations. Create comprehensive documentation and training materials for potential expansion and onboarding of additional teammates, thereby maximizing the success and reach of our Reading Program.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, English, or related field.
  • Proven experience in reading instruction, literacy development, and assessment.
  • Strong knowledge of current educational trends and best practices in reading instruction.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team.

Job Type: Part-time

Salary: $18.00-$25.00/hr

Tutoring Hours:

  • Monday-Friday (3-8PM)
  • Saturdays (9AM-1PM)

Ability to commute/relocate:

  • Montgomery, AL 36116: Reliably commute or planning to relocate before starting work (Required)
