Bethesda Center for the Homeless INC is Hiring a Shelter Monitor (NIGHT) Near Salem, NC

REPORTS TO: Shelter Director & Assistant Shelter Director

SUPERVISES: Guests

STATUS: Non-Exempt, Part-Time for 11pm-7am shift three to four days a week , BE ADVISED DAYS ARE NOT SET AND WILL VARY EACH WEEK AS NEEDED.

Summary:

Responsible for overseeing the shelter during the night or on the weekend as assigned. Monitors ensure safety of all guests and make sure guests are complying with rules and regulations of the Bethesda Center.

Essential Functions:

  • Monitors shelter and guest activities throughout the shift.
  • Conducts new guest overnight orientation, discussing Bethesda Center guidelines and procedures.
  • Enforces safety regulations and maintains order. Responds and intervenes in crisis situations to effectively de-escalate and diffuse, and follows up with appropriate personnel (Director, police, etc.).
  • Ensures guests are properly checked in using the HMIS system.
  • Distributes necessary hygiene products and addresses other minor guest needs.
  • Refers guests to other Bethesda staff (Intake Specialist, Case Managers) for further resources.
  • Opens and closes the shelter for guests as designated by the Shelter Director.
  • Maintains the dormitory and office areas.
  • Provides periodic surveillance of the building and landscape for security purposes.
  • Provides ongoing feedback and reports to the Shelter Director on individual guests and operations in general.
  • Maintains accurate records of pertinent events occurring during the shift and properly secures confidential information and/or paperwork.
  • Occasionally participates in special events, fundraising, and public presentations.
  • Maintains an active interest and involvement in issues related to the homeless, chemical dependency, and mental illness.
  • Ensures that first-rate customer service is a top priority for all guests and supporters of BCH.
  • Encourages a harmonious work environment through the use of effective communication skills with co-workers, visitors, and guests.
  • Assures quality and consistent services by being knowledgeable of and enforcing agency policies.
  • Maintains professional competency by participating in a field related up-to-date continued training, education, and personal growth experiences.
  • Promotes a positive image of Bethesda by ensuring an understanding of program services available and conducting oneself according to a professional code of ethics.
  • Performs such other duties as incumbent upon the position and as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • High school diploma required or GED equivalent
  • Experience working in similar programs and at-risk nonprofit environments preferred.
  • Articulates ideas clearly (both written and orally), listens accurately, and establishes a personal rapport with people from a variety of backgrounds.
  • Computer proficiency and technical aptitude with some knowledge of MS Office applications.
  • Maintains confidentiality at all times.
  • Dependable, flexible, and adapts quickly to changing situations.
  • Maintains dignity and self-control in stressful situations.
  • Professional, pleasant attitude, and dress.
  • Caring and compassionate yet has the ability to be authoritative and assertive when the situation demands it.
  • Knowledge of de-escalation (conflict resolution) methods, communication and techniques, and maintenance of appropriate boundaries.

Expected Hours of Work:

Typical hours vary and generally fall between 25-40 hours, with no expected overtime. On some occasions, monitors may be asked to help with replacement night/weekend shifts or daytime hours.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • Maintains physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include the following: walking, bending, stretching, lifting, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time, operating assigned equipment.
  • Exposure to unpredictable and potentially volatile clients.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, as needed.
