The BID Milton/BIDMC Adult Hip and Knee Reconstruction Fellow will participate in advanced training in primary and revision total joint arthroplasty of the hip and knee. This one-year position will be offered to board eligible or board-certified orthopaedic surgeons, who have completed a residency program in orthopaedic surgery and seek additional training.

Job Description:

BID Milton/BIDMC Adult Hip and Knee Reconstruction Fellowship

Curriculum Goals and Objectives:

The fellow will build upon a baseline skill set of techniques acquired in their residency in total joint replacement of the hip and knee and will graduate the program with expertise in all core aspects of clinical care of hip and knee arthroplasty, including preoperative evaluation and diagnosis, operative techniques, postoperative management, and management of acute and long-term complications.

Locations:

Fellows will work with multiple attending surgeons at multiple sites within the Beth Israel Lahey Hospital network, including BIDMC, BID-Milton, BID-Needham, NEBH, and NEBSC. BID Milton will serve as the central location for the fellowship.

Schedule:

The fellowship academic year will begin on August 1st and conclude on July 31st of the following calendar year. The academic year will be divided into four 3-month blocks. During each block, the fellow will be assigned to two attending physicians.

Lectures/Didactics/Conferences:

The Fellow will be required to participate and lead lectures and conferences. The current arthroplasty didactic learning schedule includes two teaching conferences per week.

Research/Scholarly Activity:

The Fellow will participate in the BIDMC arthroplasty research meeting. They will be required to participate in at least one clinical or basic science research project that will serve as a fellowship thesis project. The project will be presented at fellowship graduation, with the hope that it will be submitted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

Fellows will also be encouraged to attend local, regional, and national meetings pertaining to total joint arthroplasty. They will be part of the Boston Arthroplasty Fellows teaching curriculum, which includes quarterly journal clubs and bi-monthly technical labs with clinical fellows from MGH, BWH, NEBH, and BMC. They will be expected to attend the annual meeting of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS) in November.

Supervision Policy:

Clinical supervision will be the responsibility of the attending physicians (Drs. Baratz, Davis, Drew, and Stoker). Overall supervision will be the responsibility of the proposed program director (Dr. Michael Baratz).

Evaluation Process:

Fellows will be evaluated by the attending surgeons at the end of each block, at the mid-point of the fellowship, and at the conclusion of the fellowship. They will be evaluated based on clinical performance/skills in the operating room, office, and intangibles.

Fellows will be asked to review each rotation block, and the fellowship as a whole at the mid-point and conclusion. They will be asked to provide feedback to the program director, each individual attending, the department chairman, and residency site director.
