Bet Tzedek Legal Services is Hiring a Staff Attorney, Preventing and Ending Homelessness Project (Temporary) Near Los Angeles, CA

For 50 years, Bet Tzedek Legal Services has set the standard for innovation and excellence in social and economic justice. In that tradition, Bet Tzedek is seeking a determined, organized, and zealous attorney to work in our Preventing and Ending Homelessness Project (“PEHP”) providing legal services to residents of West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Culver City, Venice, Marina Del Rey, and certain districts in Los Angeles. This position is a temporary position to cover the duties and responsibilities of a current staff attorney who will be on a temporary leave.

This position is eligible for Bet Tzedek Legal Services’ hybrid/remote workplace designation. While the primary workplace is Bet Tzedek’s offices, at the discretion of the immediate supervisor, the employee may be permitted to work remotely or may be required to work in other locations depending on workload/business obligations.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Provide advice and counsel for tenants and unhoused residents.
  • Litigate landlord-tenant cases, including: interviewing clients; drafting responsive court forms, pleadings, motions, briefs, and correspondence; engaging in discovery practice; and regularly representing clients in settlement negotiations.
  • Attend 1 in-person clinic once per month.
  • Travel to courthouses in Los Angeles County and make in-person court appearances as needed.
  • If needed in support of the PEHP team and its goals, represent clients in non-landlord-tenant cases, such as record sealing for formerly incarcerated clients and advice on appealing public benefits denials for unhoused youth.
Requirements:
  • Active member of California State Bar in good standing (required).
  • Ability to work independently while receiving case support and supervision (required).
  • Minimum one-to-two years’ experience working in non-profit legal services (preferred).
  • Demonstrated commitment to applying principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion in performance of job duties (required).
  • Experience in landlord-tenant law (required).
  • Experience in expungements, reentry work, and public benefits (preferred).
  • Demonstrated understanding of, and commitment to, Bet Tzedek’s mission of equal justice for all and Bet Tzedek’s core values of leadership, community-based advocacy, and innovation (required).
