BERNS GREENHOUSE & GARDEN CENTER INC is Hiring a LANDSCAPE TEAM MEMBER Near Middletown, OH

  • PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This person is responsible to provide landscape installation assistance as directed by the Landscape Foreman and Landscape Manager. This includes residential, commercial and Hardscapes.

  • ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Responds politely to customer inquiries and projects a professional image
  • Operating small equipment (examples – blowers, trimmers)
  • Planting and/or transplanting of new plant material
  • Removal of existing landscape and preparation of new landscape beds
  • Communicate effectively with landscape foreman and crew members
  • Loading and unloading of trucks, with equipment and materials
  • Placement of new plant material
  • Assist with grading of beds
  • Watering of new plant material
  • Clean-up of jobsite
  • Assist with equipment and debris for return
  • Unloading of equipment and debris upon return
  • Cutting turf, trimming and edging along borders, and blowing using power equipment
  • Pruning shrubs and low trees to improve the growth habit or remove damaged branches
  • Planting and maintaining flower beds, and applying mulch
  • Maintaining a polite, friendly, responsive demeanor with co-workers, guests and customers
  • Maintains assigned equipment and notifies Landscape Manager of needed repairs
  • Reports to work at the required time and performs duties as assigned by the Landscape Manager
  • Loads equipment and materials on and off trucks and trailers
  • Moves materials and equipment and performs related duties to assist in landscaping and hardscaping
  • ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Installs hardscapes, and demolishes hardscapes
  • Digs holes and trenches and excavates for landscaping and hardscaping using picks and shovels or related equipment
  • Hauls or spreads topsoil, gravel, sand, mulch, or related materials using wheelbarrows and rakes
  • Hand-finishes grade, and apply seed, straw, or sod
  • Picking up trash and debris
  • Performing weeding by hand or using a garden hoe or hula hoe
  • Assist Landscape Maintenance staff on projects as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ethical, dependable, honest and trustworthy
  • Working knowledge of the machinery and tools used in landscape maintenance processes, i.e. Wheelbarrow, hand tools and construction tools
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Initiative, ability to work independently and with a team
  • Follows safety standards at all times
  • Valid Driver License a plus
  • Excellent communication with customer service being a priority
  • Previous experience in the landscape industry working in the field a plus
  • Experience identifying all types of plant material successfully grown in this area
  • Experience in maintaining water features and outdoor lighting
  • Available to work Monday – Saturday each week with flexibility in work hours
  • Ability to frequently lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to talk, see and hear with or without reasonable accommodations
  • Constant walking, bending, carrying, lifting, kneeling, pushing, pulling, etc.

    • JOB ENVIRONMENT:

This job is mainly performed outdoors. There are temperature extremes that range from very hot and humid in the summer months to much cooler in the winter. There is some exposure to fumes, chemicals, fertilizers, dirt, dust, pollen, seeds, noise and water. It is necessary to be in good physical shape, enjoy high amounts of physical labor and be able to work in all-weather elements. This job requires mostly standing and walking, there is also an equal amount of handling large amounts of plant material and equipment. While performing this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, see and hear. Restroom facilities not available on job site.
