Job Description

MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN III

Reports to: Maintenance Manager Department: Maintenance

Date: Revised December 2021 Location: Field Operations

Status: Support/Non-Exempt

JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision, locates, operates, inspects, modifies, maintains, repairs, and installs pumps, electric motors, gas and diesel engines, valves, and related mechanical and electrical equipment; assists in the maintenance, repairs, and operation of District wastewater facilities; performs related work as assigned. This position is the journey level class in this series and may serve as a crew lead, with incumbents performing the full range of assigned duties which includes the more difficult and complex maintenance, repair, and operation of mechanical equipment required for the continuous operation of wastewater pumping stations, treatment facilities, and related pipelines and facilities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS

  • Maintains, installs, troubleshoots, and repairs wastewater systems and facilities, and equipment, including underground facilities, pumping systems, and related controls; trains and provides technical assistance to less experienced staff; ensures completion of assigned work and compliance with regulatory requirements; responds to emergencies as needed; provides technical assistance to staff; ensures that safe work methods are followed and that appropriate safety precautions and equipment are utilized;
  • Locates, tests, operates, repairs, maintains, and installs mechanical equipment and electrical components including pumps, motors, valves, and related appurtenances; performs cleaning, greasing, and related mechanical work; fabricates, repairs, and installs a wide variety of mechanical and electrical equipment;
  • Utilizes the Computer Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to generate work orders and purchase requisitions; enters applicable data tracking for maintenance and equipment repair; prepares, inputs, and maintains accurate computerized and written records and reports related to work and maintenance performed;
  • Plans and lays out jobs from blueprints, drawings, sketches, work orders, or verbal instructions; assists with preparation of staffing, material, and equipment estimates for projects; maintains records in the form of blueprints, plans, and specifications for equipment and devices; schedules and coordinates activities with other staff, departments, or agencies; responds to emergency situations as necessary including those occurring after normal working hours;
  • Estimates and secures tools, materials, and supplies necessary to complete assignments, requests parts and supplies as necessary; maintains work sites in a clean and orderly condition;
  • Inspects remote facilities and equipment and makes recommendations for repairs, replacements, or calibrations and reviews operating procedures to ensure adherence to maintenance requirements;
  • Interprets plans, specifications, "as-builts", and books for designated work locations; reads charts and gauges; maintains records and logs;
  • Performs troubleshooting, repairs, maintenance, installation, and adjustments to a variety of District appurtenances; locates, tests, operates, repairs, maintains, and installs mechanical equipment and components including pumps, motors, valves, and related appurtenances; fabricates, repairs, and installs a wide variety of mechanical equipment; generates and maintains Lock-out/Tag-out procedures;
  • Reviews drawings and material requests to ensure compliance with applicable codes, industry standards, and district specifications; research, test, and analyze pumping conditions to evaluate existing design and efficiency;
  • Observes safe work methods and safety precautions related to the work; requests and follows traffic control as necessary; uses appropriate safety devices and equipment; safely operates and maintains a wide variety of hand and power tools related to the work;
  • Uses and performs minor maintenance on a variety of hand and power tools; maintains and cares for all work equipment and tools used;
  • Operates service truck to respond to customer complaints; determines if repairs are the District’s responsibility; reports work needed to relevant department;
  • Operates assigned vehicles skillfully and safely; loads and unload trucks; inspects and fuels vehicles and performs minor maintenance; reports needed repairs to fleet mechanics; observes safe driving practices;
  • Operates copiers and a variety of office equipment;
  • Performs duties in a professional manner and works well with others or in a team setting;
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative working relationships with co-workers, outside agencies, and the public;
  • Regular attendance and adherence to prescribed work schedule to conduct job responsibilities;
  • Observes safe work practices and safety methods; performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Equipment, techniques, and procedures involved in the maintenance and repair of sewer lift stations and wastewater treatment plants, and related facilities and equipment;
  • Mechanical principles related to the maintenance and repair of pumps, electric motors, gas and diesel engines, valves, and related mechanical equipment and appurtenances;
  • Operation and maintenance of a wide variety of equipment, hand and power tools, and machinery used in the work, including voltmeters, multimeters, amp meters and other specialized equipment;
  • Wastewater system operations; preventive maintenance practices; shop mathematics;
  • Basic computer skills, telephone and radio communications;
  • Safe work conditions; methods and safety practices and precautions pertaining to the work;
  • Record keeping practices pertaining to the work.

Ability to:

  • Maintain, repair, and replace all types of pumps, electric motors, gas and diesel engines, valves, and related mechanical equipment and appurtenances;
  • Perform varied mechanical maintenance and repair work;
  • Diagnose problems and determine appropriate action(s) and timeframe;
  • Read, interpret, and work from sketches, books, blueprints, and specifications;
  • Perform a variety of manual and semi-skilled tasks related to water and wastewater facilities and appurtenances;
  • Utilize the Microsoft Office Suite with a beginner to intermediate level of competency;
  • Keep accurate records and make reports;
  • Read plans, as-builts, books, and district maps for locating equipment and appurtenances;
  • Determine correct shut down procedures, valve operations, and re-activation procedures;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with management, the public, staff, and others contacted in the course of the work;
  • Ability and willingness to become familiar with the Berkeley County service area.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; additional schooling or technical training preferred;

six years of experience in the operation, repair, and maintenance of pumps, electric motors, and industrial engines work at a level equivalent to the District's class of Maintenance Technician II. Current valid driver’s license required. Journeyman electrical license required.

  • Regularly travels in District vehicles; exposed to unusually loud sounds; works with equipment causing pronounced vibration or strain; exposed to hazardous materials, including sewage;
  • Frequently works in permit-defined confined spaces; works on slippery surfaces; gets part of body and/or clothing wet;
  • This position is “on call” 24 hours per day, seven days per week on a rotating basis;
  • May be required to wear and/or use personal protective and other safety equipment;
  • Must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds;
  • Requires unlimited physical ability; regularly required to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time; use hands and fingers to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk, hear, taste, and smell;
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, color, and peripheral vision; depth perception; and the ability to adjust focus;
  • Worker will be subject to adverse conditions to include extreme heat, extreme cold, wind, rain, snow, dust;
  • Worker will be subject to fumes, odors, and excessive noise levels.
