Job Summary
This position performs law enforcement and crime prevention activities relating to federal, state, and local traffic and criminal laws and ordinances. Arrests and books suspects; transports prisoners; investigates crimes and criminal complaints; provides field service of civil process; and prepares necessary reports. Performs other work as required.

Testing for this position is required. Both the POST and ORPAT tests will be offered on
 ***Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at the Benton County Fairgrounds starting at 8:00am. ***
 Previous test results for any DPSST approved written test and ORPAT will be accepted if they've been completed within 1 year.

  • Get paid for your knowledge and expertise:

    • 7.5% Detective Pay
    • 2%  ORPAT Pay annually-for 4:59 or less
    • 4% DPSST Intermediate Certification

  • Lateral Benefits: 
    • Oregon Laterals currently DPSST certified do not have to test
    • Guaranteed interview
    • Pay (within scale) is at discretion of Sheriff
    • Sick and vacation banks at discretion of Sheriff
  • Annual salary range of:
    • $65,137.13 - $94,413.16 Annually
    • This position guarantees two salary raises within your first year as long as your performance is in good standing!
  • Annual salary range increases:
    1. Effective July 1, 2024, the salary schedule for positions in the bargaining unit shall be increased by four percent (4%). 
    2. Effective July 1, 2025, the salary schedule for positions in the bargaining unit shall be increased by four percent (4%).
The County will pay a retention bonus to employees based on the chart below:
Payable on June 30, 2024, paycheck $1,500* 
Payable on June 30, 2025, paycheck $2,000* 
Payable on June 30, 2026, paycheck $2,500*

*To be eligible for the retention bonuses, the employee must have been employed at the beginning of the fiscal year (July 1) in which the payment is made.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Valid State issued Driver's License with good driving record.
  • 21 years of age at time of hire.
  • High School Graduate or GED equivalent (bachelor's degree preferred).
  • US Citizen.
  • Complete the ORPAT during hiring process and during Academy.
  • Successfully pass a criminal records check, psych and medical before being hired.
  • DPSST Basic Law Enforcement Certification - within 18 months of employment.
  • LEDS Certification required within 6 months of hiring.
  • First Aid and CPR Certifications within 60 days of hiring.
All qualified candidates must complete the POST written test with a 70% or higher overall score and the ORPAT (Oregon Physical Abilities Test). You may submit previously earned test results (within 1 year for both the ORPAT and the written test).
No experience necessary; we will train. Preference will go towards lateral applicants who are currently Law Enforcement Certified and in good standing with their current/most recent agency.
