Summary:

The Deputy Sheriff’s position, under the guidance of the shift sergeant, is responsible for exercising and in-depth knowledge of law enforcement in protecting and serving the County by enforcing traffic and criminal laws. The position requires the incumbent to stay abreast of any changes in both criminal and traffic laws. This position will also require the incumbent to frequently act in a trainer/instructor role. The incumbent will need to have obtained the necessary state certifications for these instructor or trainer roles.

The position will also be frequently required to act in a supervisory role in the absence of the Shift Sergeant. During those occasions the incumbent will be required to facilitate all functions of a shift supervisor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Patrol all areas of the County, investigate/report motor vehicle accidents, and assist other agencies in investigating other violations of the traffic laws.
  • Answer all complaints handled through the Sheriff’s Office to include, but not limited to, civil matters, such as family disturbances, property disputes, locating missing persons, assisting motorists, and answering any other matter requiring police assistance.
  • Answer complaints that are criminal in nature such as drug or alcohol related offenses (driving while intoxicated, public intoxication, possession and manufacturing of a controlled substance.) May also be part of responses to homicides, burglary, robbery, rape, theft, suicide, forgery, and any other criminal act as the situation requires, and to perform arrests and other associated procedures.
  • Answer complaints in regards to property crimes, which include criminal mischief, theft of property, forgery, burglary and to perform arrests and other related procedures.
  • Answer complaints in regards to crimes against persons which include but are not limited to: domestic violence, rape, assault, suicide and perform the investigation and other related procedures to conduct the investigation.
  • Fill-out reports and file, interview suspects and witnesses when necessary and appear in court. Be able to take the case from start to finish. Assist in serving of civil papers and warrants.
  • Maintain equipment and make arrangements for repairs, when necessary.
  • Ensure all contacts with the Sheriff’s Office are treated courteously and fairly in accordance with federal and state laws and that accurate information is provided to any office contact.
  • Receive advanced training in the areas of law enforcement, drug identification, court systems, warrants and accident investigation.
  • Receive advanced training in the use of self-defense and physical constrain procedures.
  • Keeps current on County policies and procedures
  • Knowledgeable in all civil papers and affidavits to include reading, explanation, service, and follow-up.
  • Write up an effective probable cause before detainment of an individual as well as probable cause affidavits for bond hearing and search warrants.
  • Knowledge in the reading and service of ex-parte orders of protection.
  • Will be required to act as a trainer in the form of being a Field Training Officer, or a certified law enforcement instructor, or conducts specialized training as a member of the BCSO SWAT team.
  • Will act as shift supervisor with all duties and responsibilities in the absence of the shift Sergeant.

Qualification Requirements:

Other Skills and Abilities:

  • Must not have a felony criminal record of any kind before selection into this position. Must also be free of any convictions involving domestic assaults or batteries. Must be able to pass a complete background investigation. In addition, must complete a physical and mental evaluation as part of the employment requirements.
  • The individual must have the knowledge and the physical and mental stamina to fire a variety of weapons, must possess the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and written, often under adverse conditions; possess good judgment, good powers of observation and memory skills. The ability to define problems, collect evidence, establish facts and draw complete and accurate conclusions from those areas. Ability to interpret a variety of county, state and federal laws making decisions and taking quick action. Must be able to react quickly and efficiently in all emergencies, natural or man-caused disasters. Communications skills including computer, radio, and typing skills are essential.
  • The position will require the incumbent to have at least three years certified law enforcement experience in a patrol function.
  • Must be able to read and write in the English language.
  • The incumbent must be able to effectively communicate orally in a courtroom setting. This ability is essential in obtaining criminal convictions and maintaining departmental integrity.
  • A Deputy Sheriff may be called to duty 24 hours a day, any day of the year.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • The Deputy Sheriff has the sole responsibility of maintaining the scene and directing all emergency personnel and other people until the scene is released to a supervisor or a member of the Criminal Investigation Division.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Graduation from high school or a GED. Completion of the Arkansas Law Enforcement Training Academy’s basic training, annual firearms qualification for all issued departmental firearms or approved personal firearms which may be carried on duty. Knowledge of law enforcement, civil process, warrant operations, prisoner transportation, court system, basic first aid, CPR, protections from blood borne pathogens. Knowledge of county policy and procedures, local, state, and federal laws. Self-defense and physical constraints procedures are also required.

Experience required for advanced placement:

  • At least 3 years as a certified police officer.
  • Possess a Law Enforcement Standards General Certificate.

Working Relationships:

  • Must be able to develop positive working relationships within the divisions of the Benton County Sheriff’s department situations may occur where the deputy must diffuse highly emotional situations in a short time-period. The deputy must be able to represent the Sheriff’s Office in a professional and respectful manner at all times.

Faces physical dangers in a high-risk profession including but not limited to: High speed driving/pursuits, making physical arrest, dealing with intoxicated subjects, both alcohol and drugs, highly emotional environments (family disputes), high risk situations, alarms, robberies. Environmental factors in fumes, toxins and particles from crime scene investigations (arson scenes, decomposed bodies) dangers involved in traffic control as accident scenes and accident investigation.
  • Noise level is normally moderate but can and often does range from high to very high.
