Bentley School is Hiring a Facilities Maintenance Worker, Jr Near Lafayette, CA

Reports To: Director of Facilities

Position Type: Non-Exempt, 12-months

Position Summary

The Facilities Maintenance Worker Jr position is a mid-level role in the Facilities Department and is responsible for providing students and staff with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient place to work, learn, and develop. Positions will be assigned to a primary school, but will need to travel to support the other campus. The Facilities Maintenance Worker Jr varies from the Facilities Maintenance Worker in that the role is not the lead at each campus and will not be responsible for distribution of work.

The position will be Monday through Friday days with occasional evening and weekend work required to assist with events.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

Perform a variety of custodial, grounds maintenance and routine building maintenance activities involved in maintaining assigned buildings, facilities and grounds in a safe, clean and orderly condition.

  • Clean classrooms, lounges, offices, hallways and other facilities as assigned; sweep, scrub, mop, strip, wax and polish floors; vacuum rugs and carpets; spot clean and shampoo carpets; empty waste receptacles and replace liners; spot mop spills; remove gum and debris as needed.
  • Perform grounds maintenance and gardening duties in the beautification of assigned grounds and landscaped areas; mow, edge, trim, and water lawns, fields and other turf grounds; prepare and fertilize soil; water various grounds areas by hand or by operating the irrigation system.
  • Clean and disinfect drinking fountains and restroom facilities including sinks, toilets and urinals; fill dispensers with towels, soap, toilet paper and other items; clean mirrors, tile, walls, doors and windows; unclog drains and toilets as needed.
  • Pick up and remove paper and other debris from grounds areas, parking lots, playgrounds, floors, walkways and areas adjacent to Bentley facilities; sweep litter from walks, driveways and other concrete surfaces and assigned areas; dust and polish furniture and woodwork.
  • Plant, cultivate, prune, spray, fertilize and irrigate flowers, trees, grass and shrubs; hoe and pull weeds and rake leaves; edge walkways.
  • Perform a variety of routine general maintenance and repairs; respond to work orders; replace light bulbs; repair, adjust and replace electrical, plumbing, HVAC and various other parts, components and fixtures as directed; maintain walls and patch holes as needed; apply paint and remove graffiti.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of equipment such as vacuums, mops, blowers, mowers, buffer/scrubber machines, carpet cleaners, edger, tractors, trimmers, saws and various hand and power tools; drive a vehicle to conduct work as assigned by the position.
  • Communicate with Bentley faculty and staff to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns.
  • Inspect facilities and equipment to determine maintenance and repair needs; perform preventive maintenance activities.
  • Identify, report and assist with resolving safety, sanitary and fire hazards as directed; refer major maintenance and repair needs to appropriate staff.
  • Maintain all safety and maintenance documentation (fire code, etc)
  • Monitor facility systems, such as, HVAC, EMS, fire alarm, security, and camera system.
  • Initiate, process and track work orders using the work order system.
  • Lock and unlock doors and gates as appropriate; turn lights on and off as needed; set alarms as required; maintain security of assigned areas according to established guidelines; raise and lower flags as assigned by the position.
  • Set-up rooms, chairs, equipment and tables for meetings and other events as assigned; clean up furniture, equipment and debris following these events.
  • Monitor inventory levels of custodial, grounds maintenance and building maintenance supplies as required; assist with ordering, receiving and maintaining inventory of supplies as assigned.
  • Move and arrange furniture, supplies and equipment as needed; pick up and distribute supplies and equipment as requested.
  • Apply pest control methods to eradicate weeds and other pests according to established procedures as assigned.
  • Maintain routine records related to assigned activities.
  • Perform delivery tasks between the two campuses.
  • Able to work independently, exercising judgment and initiative.
  • Performs related duties as assigned

Ability to:

  • Perform routine custodial and maintenance duties to maintain assigned work areas in a clean, safe, and secure manner.
  • Use cleaning materials and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Operate a variety of custodial and maintenance equipment.
  • Move and arrange furniture and equipment.
  • Use email and Google Suite for daily tasks.
  • Observe and report safety hazards and need for maintenance and repair.
  • Learn, understand, and apply pertinent policies, work standards, and health and safety regulations.
  • Maintain routine files and records.
  • Organize own work, set priorities, and meet critical time deadlines.
  • Use tact, initiative, prudence, and judgment within general policy and procedural guidelines.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Qualifications:

  • Equivalent to a high school diploma
  • Three (3) years of janitorial, maintenance, or grounds-keeping work, or related

experience.

  • Valid CA Driver’s License

Working Conditions:

  • Employees work in an office, classroom, or outdoor environment with moderate to loud noise levels, cold and/or hot temperature conditions, inclement weather conditions, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, cleaning agents and chemicals, fumes, dust, and odors, and may be exposed to blood and body fluids while performing cleaning duties.

Physical Requirements:

  • Mobility to work in and around standard Bentley offices and buildings; to sit, stand, and walk on level, uneven, or slippery surfaces; frequently reach, twist, turn, kneel, bend, stoop, squat, crouch,grasp, and make repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties; to climb and descend ladders; to operate varied hand and power tools and custodial equipment.
  • Strength and stamina to perform medium to heavy physical work; to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects averaging a weight of 50 pounds or heavier weights, in all cases with the use of proper equipment and/or assistance from other staff.
  • Vision to inspect assigned work areas and to read printed materials.
  • Standing and walking for extended periods of time.
  • Finger dexterity to operate custodial equipment.

Pay Range:

Bentley uses a competitive salary scale, which takes into account experience, education, and skill level. The starting salary we reasonably expect to pay for this position ranges from $24.00 - $26.00 per hour.
