Job Description / Essential Elements:
BENICIA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

PERMIT TEACHER

DEFINITION
Under general supervision, to plan and implement learning and enrichment experiences for pre-school and elementary age children; to provide for the physical care and safety of children; to exercise lead supervision over assigned assistants; to maintain official documents and records; and to perform related work as assigned.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
Positions in this class are assigned to operate pre-school instructional and enrichment programs and/or elementary age before and after school child care programs. Incumbents are responsible to plan and implement programs, activities, and childcare; to lead assigned assistants; and to maintain routine program records.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Develop lesson plans and implement activities that include music, art, cooking, computer skill, language arts, mathematics, fine and gross motor skills, science, and social studies to promote language, emotional, social, physical, and cognitive development; read stories with children and discuss what was read; conduct individual and small group activities that provide learning and enrichment; motivate children to participate in activities and to learn; plan homework sessions for school age students; establish and enforce standards of behavior; and supervise children in the classroom, on the playground, and on field trips. Plan and schedule field trips.

Maintain a safe and orderly environment for children in the classroom, on the playground, and on field trips; decorate room for themes and seasons; take out, set up and put away equipment, toys and materials for activities.

Prepare and serve snacks and lunches and clean up area; assist small children in the use of bathroom, in washing hands, in tying shoes, in dressing and in caring for their belongings; clean children after toilet accidents; provide clean clothing for children who have soiled clothes; put children down for rests and naps; conduct emergency drills.

Administer first aid and medication in accordance with physician and parent instructions and District policy; fill out accident reports and medication log; contact emergency service personnel, District nurse, and parents, as appropriate, in cases of emergency and illness; maintain accurate health records for pre-school children.

Maintain necessary and mandated records; sign children in as they arrive; sign children out as they leave; record free, reduced and full cost lunches; maintain emergency cards for each child; observe children and record observations and anecdotal notes; collect student-produced materials for inclusion in student portfolio; monitor food and supply budgets; Report suspected cases of child abuse in accordance with the Child Abuse Reporting Law and District policy; use office machines and classroom equipment; make copies and cut out materials.

Coordinate conferences with parent; plan and conduct parent meetings; plan and implement fund raising activities with parents and staff; visit homes, as assigned.

Shop for snacks; place orders for toys, craft materials and supplies; prepare work orders for repairs. Sweep and clean up after activities; clean kitchen appliances; clean and organize shelves, cupboards, and drawers; and make minor repairs to games and toys.

Set up and operate audio visual equipment; turn on computers, load software, format desktop, assign access codes to students, set-up student folders, and check computer and peripheral equipment for proper functioning; format, label and make back-up computer disks; attach cables to peripheral equipment and CPU and plug equipment into electrical outlets; print student reports of computer assisted instruction. Select appropriate software for curriculum and integrate computer instruction into the instructional plan.

Serve on assigned committees and teams; participate in District mandated training and retraining programs; perform related work as required.

LICENSE REQUIRED
Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver's License.
Possession of a valid Children's Center Permit issued by the State of California; or possession of a current and valid Child Development Associate (CDA) credential with appropriate age level endorsement issued by CDA National Credentialing Program.
Possession of valid First Aid and CPR certification.

QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Modern methods of instruction, developmental needs, and behavior appropriate to pre-school and elementary age children.
English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Reading and writing in English and principles.
Literature, art, music, dance, crafts, math and basic reading principles for pre-school and elementary age level.
Operation of standard office equipment.
Basic record keeping techniques.
Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.

Ability to:
Develop and implement instructional plans that are aligned with curriculum and program standards and are interesting to children.
Supervise students in classrooms, on the playground and on field trips.
Communicate well with children and motivate them to learn and participate in activities.
Establish and maintain appropriate classroom behavior and deal effectively with student behavioral problems.
Recognize and remove safety hazards.
Learn laws, rules, practices, and procedures related to the assigned program.
Maintain accurate records.
Monitor and guide the work of assistants.
Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
A typical qualifying entrance background is high school graduation or equivalent (GED) and possession of a current valid Child Development Associate (CDA) credential with appropriate age level endorsement issued by the CDA National Credentialing Program, and at least six months of on-the-job training and/or work experience (a minimum of 50 days in a six month period) in a licensed child care center or comparable program is qualifying (some positions); or possession of a Children's Center Permit issued by the California Commission on Teacher Preparation and Licensing is qualifying.

Mental Requirements: read, write, understand, interpret and apply information at a 12th grade proficiency level; math skills at an eighth grade proficiency level; judgement and the ability to process information quickly; learn quickly and follow verbal procedures and standards; give verbal instruction; copying and coordinating information and records.
