Bend-La Pine School District is Hiring a 8 Hour Speech and Language Pathology Assistant- Special Programs - Regular Near Bend, OR

DESCRIPTION OF THE CLASSIFICATION

Under supervision, the SLPA provides supported education services in classrooms, resource centers, or other school-related areas. The SLPA is directly involved in the instructional program for assigned students and their identified special needs in speech and language. The responsibilities include in and out of class supervision of students; small group and one on one instruction of students; and general assistance to the SLP. The SLPA works independently after becoming familiar with the instructional needs of delayed or disabled students as directed by the SLP. The SLPA seeks clarification from the SLP for new or unusual situations. The SLPA works on a daily basis with delayed or disabled students who require special attention to meet their unique needs. The SLPA works under the supervision of the SLP and/or administrator.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The SLPA may conduct the following tasks under supervision of the licensed SLP:
1. Conduct speech/language and hearing screenings without interpretation, utilizing screening protocols specified by the supervising SLP.
2. Document patient/client progress, without interpretation of findings, toward meeting established objectives as stated in the treatment plan, and report this information to the SLP.
3. Under direction of the supervising SLP, communicates with teacher to provide information, implement plans for service and make recommendations.
4. Assist the SLP in collecting and tallying of data for assessment purposes, without interpretation.
5. Assist the SLP with informal documentation during an intervention session (collecting and tallying data as directed by the SLP), prepare materials and assist with other clerical duties as specified by the supervising SLP.
6. Schedule activities and prepare charts, records, graphs or other displays of data.
7. Perform checks and maintenance of equipment.
8. Participate with the SLP in research projects, in-service training and public relations programs.
9. Initial each clinical entry and sign each page of records.
10. Assists in monitoring the daily school routines of a small group and/or individual low functioning student as needed.
11. Follows the assigned daily schedule.
12. Student supervision as needed
13. Fulfills other related duties as assigned.
14. Provides and documents services for students receiving Medicaid benefits on behalf of the SLP who co-signs and submits billing as required.
15. Fulfills and maintains performance standards identified in the evaluation process as required by the position.
16. Fulfills working conditions and physical effort listed below.
17. Complete annual SLP/SLPA supervision requirements including: supervision notice(s), treatment consultation, and competency review.
18. Other related duties as assigned

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT

The SLPA works with small groups of students and on a one-to-one basis who may be physically or mentally disabled, learning disabled, emotionally disturbed, speech or language delayed and/or culturally different. Supervision responsibilities require the SLPA to be able to stand for up to 30 consecutive minutes and move rapidly to intervene in situations where a student's safety is being jeopardized. The supervision may also occur during times of inclement weather. The employee needs to be able to lift materials, boxes or equipment weighing up to 30 pounds and / or maneuver up to 50 pounds.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge:

1. Thorough knowledge of anatomy, physiology, normal communication development, phonetics and various speech/language disorders.

2. Teaching methods and procedures, especially as related to speech/language development and treatment.

3. Filing and record keeping systems.

4. Computers, audio-visual equipment and office machines, and their operation.

5. Instructional materials and their uses.

6. Basic provisions of IDEA, due process procedures, and the IEPs for students identified as disabled or delayed.

7. Student behavior and methods to assure proper conduct.

8. Safety procedures.

Skills & Abilities:

Possess the physical ability to regularly attend work and fulfill the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.

1. Read, understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

2. Learn the operation of telephones, computers, and other equipment used in the work, as required by the position.

3. Accurately transfer, record and convey information, and materials as required by the position.

4. Communicate clearly and appropriately in speech and in writing in accordance with educational standards.

5. Promote the success of special education programs.

6. Maintain a patient, positive, persistent attitude and a warm, accepting personality toward persons with disabilities.

7. Adhere to the district requirements for a drug-free workplace

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Valid SLPA certificate that fulfills requirements of the Oregon State Board of Examiners for Speech/Language and Audiology. Comprehensive knowledge of grammar, the ability to use correct speech and compose routine correspondence, and the ability to understand technical instructions (computers) is required. The position requires knowledge of technical procedures. Working knowledge of School District practices or policies may be necessary. Job proficiency can be acquired in six months to one year.

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSING:

Provide current and valid SLPA certificate and maintain any continuing education requirements. NCLB (No Child Left Behind) Paraprofessional qualifications for positions at sites that are designated as Title I School-wide programs.
