Position Purpose:

Working with executive leadership, the Editorial Director would use their knowledge of best practices for professional teaching and learning, as well as practical classroom experience, to help develop new print products and resources in a supplemental way for sale through eCommerce, Distributor and Trade Channels. This role has a dual focus on 1) helping to build an established business into a well-known brand with a recognizable point of view and trusted, go-to materials and 2) helping to develop and execute short- and long-term publication plans on time and within established budgets. The Editorial Director will also help contribute to a content development team and help establish workflows vis a vis approved pub plans. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Working with executive leadership, help conceptualize new product ideas to be sold both through the education distributors, eCommerce and dealer-trade markets.
  • Help establish a rationale for building a series of connected products that collectively tell a story about raising new brand awareness and focus. 
  • Help build upon that rationale across short- and longer-term publishing plans, inclusive of product repurposing for different channels and focuses.
  • Find and develop relationships with new authors and maintain and build relationships with existing authors in order to develop new products and build on existing ones.
  • Understand legacy products and envision how and when to update them or build off/upsell from them. Help develop and maintain backlist product roadmaps.
  • Work directly with authors to set direction for the work, make changes as needed for clarification, and rewrite or reorganize materials as needed.
  • Help contribute to a staffing plan and provide rationale in order to meet goals outlined in short- and longer-term publication plans.
  • In partnership with executive leadership, instructionally design, edit and prepare product manuscripts and supporting resources, ensuring educational validity, clarity, purposefulness, best practices, and ease of use. Begin with pedagogical and market research and help establish instructional design. 
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of educational trends, practices, and interests, and advise and mentor internal teams accordingly.
  • Help establish a plan to tag content as it is being developed and as part of the workflow with a specific eye toward modular content development and content repurposing across varied formats and markets.
  • Work cross-functionally with content development teams across all product lines.

Job Requirements/Skills and Experience:

  • 10 years of experience content development in the education marketspace, with particular emphasis on supplemental development of product created for and purchased directly by teachers 
  • Facility with both print development
  • MA or MS degree in education or related field or equivalent experience. PhD is a plus
  • PreK-12 classroom teaching experience preferred
  • Excellent editorial skills and ability to develop products from concepting to final execution
  • Excellent management skills
  • Strong written and verbal skills
  • Attention to detail and ability to multitask and adapt to changing priorities
  • Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills
  • Passion for and willingness to contribute to a collaborative team environment
  • Attention to detail and to the importance of deadlines is a must

Salary Range: $110,000 - $130,000

*The base salary range represents the low and high end of the expected salary range for the position. The base salary offered may depend on a variety of factors such as geographic location, experience, education, and skill level.
