Beltrami County is Hiring a Corrections Officer Near Bemidji, MN

Beltrami County is creating an eligibility list for the position of Corrections Officer. There are currently multiple openings with both full-time and part-time schedules available and are considered permanent, benefited positions. The full-time successful applicants will work seven (7) twelve (12) hour shifts in a two week period. The part-time successful applicants will work an average of 40 hours per week.
Performs intermediate protective service and human support work overseeing care and security of inmates at the Beltrami County Jail, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Corrections Sergeant.
Education and Experience
Minimum requirements are:
  • Two years of post-secondary education in any discipline and
  • Valid Driver's License
Job offer contingent upon successfully passing a background check, drug screening, psychological exam and physical.
Qualification Requirements
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. Essential Functions
Responsible for the control and supervision of inmates; safeguards inmates; ensure inmates are accounted for; solves disagreements; enforces jail rules; disciplines inmates; conducts daily and random inspections of housing.
 Assists inmates with medical needs; accounts for and provides prescribed medications; monitors various medical conditions for status; assesses medical situations for emergency status; provides first aid.
 Maintains jail security; responds to inmate questions and concerns; opens and closes doors electronically; monitors multiple cameras; assists public in non-secure areas; monitor inmate programs; listen to and respond to radio traffic verify meal counts and supervise meal distribution; assist in transporting inmates to other facilities.
Completes booking process; searches inmates for weapons and contraband upon admittance; open and manage inmate financial accounts; fingerprint; release inmates as directed.
Performs as Field Training Officer; assists in training new hires; report on progress of trainees; assists in update of field training modules.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
General knowledge of the security, rules, regulations and procedures of the institution; general knowledge of the practices related to the supervision and care of inmates; general knowledge of jail medical protocols; general knowledge of the use of law enforcement equipment, and jail monitoring equipment; general knowledge of standard and specialized software; ability to enforce institutional rules firmly and fairly; ability to detect potential behavior problems of inmates; ability to detect the early symptoms of common health problems; ability to exercise tact and judgment in handling visitors of the court and in maintaining the behavior of inmates; ability to carry out oral and written directions accurately; ability to supervise the activities of large groups of inmates; ability to prepare records and reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, inmates and the general public.
 
Physical Requirements
This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, frequently requires sitting and occasionally requires standing, walking, using hands to finger, handle or feel, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting; work requires close vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
Special Requirements
First Aid / CPR / AED / Oxygen Delivery certification required within six months of hire.
On-going training in first aid, Taser / OC / Defensive Tactics emergency procedures, health policy, and OSHA / Blood Borne Pathogens required.
Valid Driver's License.
