Bellingham Technical College is Hiring a Lab Instructional Technician II - Nursing Near Bellingham, WA

Bellingham Technical College invites applications for a Lab Instructional Technician II for the nursing program. This is a regular full-time year-round classified position. This position reports to the Dean of Nursing. It is anticipated to begin in June, 2024.
 
This position does not require a nursing degree or healthcare experience. This position will assist faculty in the laboratory and simulation lab setting, setting up and monitoring lab assignments, and providing one-on-one teaching support utilizing different technologies.

Typical duties and responsibilities include:
  • Assist with day-to-day activities and services of the nursing lab area, including lab set up, management of lab equipment and supplies; 
  • Operate equipment such as low, medium, and high-fidelity human patient simulators, lab media equipment/systems, and other nursing lab equipment; 
  • Specifically assist with the implementation of simulation scenarios; 
  • Ensure that all equipment and supplies are in order and secure before leaving the laboratory; 
  • Maintain area for cleanliness as well as safety; act as a safety officer; teach safe handling of equipment and materials; oversee sanitation of lab equipment and areas;
  • Catalog equipment and supplies for easy acquisition; requisition supplies as necessary; 
  • Identify occurrences of equipment malfunction or breakage and needs for equipment replacement or additional and contact appropriate services and make simple repairs and perform minor maintenance to lab equipment; 
  • Assist instructor in individualized and group instruction and use of the equipment in occupational and other instructional classes; 
  • Direct and instruct student assistants in the operation and maintenance of equipment; 
  • Administer standardized tests to students; score tests and record results for analysis; 
  • May coordinate the work of Instructional Technician I's; 
  • Direct Peer Tutors and work-study students; 
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • An Associate Degree, a vocational certificate or Bachelor's Degree, OR two years of college course work; AND two years of experience; OR equivalent educational/experience (does not require nursing or healthcare education or experience); 
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite and online file management systems. 
Preferred Qualification:
  • Experience maintaining an inventory and ordering supplies;
  • Proficiency in Learning Management Systems such as Canvas; 
  • Knowledge of healthcare equipment, supplies, and technology; 
  • Prior experience in healthcare.
Essential Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Computer skills;
  • Excellent organizational skills and high degree of accuracy and attention to details;
  • Ability to provide consistent, professional and excellent communication and effective customer service to students, college staff and the public;
  • Ability to work independently and/or with team member;
  • Ability to work independently in a secure office one on one with students;
  • Ability to discern sensitive materials and maintain appropriate confidentiality;
  • Ability to work with individuals of varied ethnicity, ages, backgrounds, and abilities in an inclusive and participatory manner;
  • Required to maintain regular, punctual attendance.
Essential Work Environment:
Lab setting, using a variety of software; must be able to sit and stand for long periods of time; frequent need for oral, written and auditory communication; frequent use of computer and mouse; stooping, bending, twisting and lifting up to 50 pounds; frequent finger manipulation, typing, grasping, repetitive motion; working in an environment that may be noisy at times and with frequent interruptions and distractions; Excellent organizational skills; handle and safely clean up and dispose of biohazard materials common to the designated program area; work routinely with and around hazardous materials, potential allergens, chemicals and smells; frequent contact with latex; ability to lead others. Compensation and Work Schedule:
Salary is in accordance with the negotiated agreement with the Bellingham Education Support Team (BEST), full-time Salary is at Range 9, $4,263 per month ($24.50 per hour), with annual increments to $5,350 per month ($30.75 per hour) after five years of BTC experience in this position.
 
Leave is subject to the BEST negotiated agreement which currently expires June 30, 2026. At full-time, this position receives 8 hours per month of sick leave and starts with 10.67 hours per month (16 days per year) of vacation leave, 24 hours of personal leave and 12 paid state/college holidays per calendar year. The vacation and personal leave are available after successful completion of a 180 worked day probationary period. Benefits also include a Washington State insurance package including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, and long-term disability; a retirement benefits package, with choice between the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) Plan 2 or 3, up to five days of bereavement leave, depending on relative, up to 5 days birth/adoption leave, military leave per RCW 38.40.060 and paid civil/jury duty. Additional optional benefits include ability to participate in a medical Flexible Spending plan, Limited Purpose Flexible Spending plan, or Health Savings Account; Dependent Care Assistance; auto and homeowners insurance discounts, employee only tuition waiver assistance; and two voluntary investment (not matched) programs - TIAA (403b) or the State Deferred Compensation (457) plan.
 
The regular work schedule is generally Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., but may be scheduled during the 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. workday; schedule may vary, especially around quarter start and end and peak dates, and may require some overtime, evening and Saturday hours. The position will be expected to work onsite full-time.
