Bednark Studio Inc. is Hiring a Waterjet and Fiber Laser Programmer/Technician Near Brooklyn, NY

The Waterjet and Fiber Laser Programmer / Technician is responsible for two key areas: 

1. Production and Machine Management
2. Systems and Safety 

The Waterjet and Fiber Laser Programmer / Technician is an expert programmer and technician responsible for keeping their assigned project on pace. They receive technical drawings and files and establish task priorities according to the production schedule and available machines and operators. They oversee the shop spaces they work in to safely and efficiently complete the scope of work assigned to them and may oversee a WaterJet/Fiber Laser Operator. 

You are responsible for troubleshooting any unforeseen situations in the process and are a role model of the Digital Fabrication Department demonstrating the finest craftsmanship and work ethic. 
Below is a more detailed description of this work: 

Production Machine Management
  • Interprets technical drawings & cut files. Reports back to the Department Manager with questions, comments, concerns.
  • Responsible for operation, loading, and unloading material and parts, proving programs, operating controls, setting offsets, deburring, and inspection of quality parts for conformance to requirements.
  • Maintains, tracks, and plans tasks according to the production schedule.
  • Manages project-specific communications and completes tasks as listed in Asana. 
  • Oversees daily operations of assigned tasks and space. 
  • Gathers and tracks all required tools, equipment, and hardware for the appointed projects.
  • Detects equipment malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjusts machine, within capabilities, controls, or control media as required to ensure production quality.
  • Reports all machine malfunctions to Management.
  • Performs at a high level of craftsmanship, strong work ethic, and resourcefulness.
  • Exhibits strong knowledge of abrasives, metals, and plastic-based engineered sheet goods.
  • Proficient in Laser / Waterjet operating, programming, nesting, scaling, tooling, modifying cut files in CAD, and joining techniques.
  • Proficient in troubleshooting, and maintaining Waterjets as well as water filtration systems and pumps.
  • Proficient in Fiber Laser cutting parameters, troubleshooting, and maintaining Fiber Lasers as well as maintaining required gas tanks.
  • Leads the department in new machine training and implementation.
  • Masters all Department machines, equipment, and tools.
  • Demonstrates keen attention to detail and thoroughness.
  • Attends engineering and project meetings as needed. 
  • Consults with CNC Manager, and/or Draftsperson on engineering and best cutting/tooling practices. Oversees and enforces a clean and orderly fabrication workspace. 
  • Observes and demonstrate safe and efficient cutting practices and tool use. 
  • Forecasts and communicates completion timelines of cuts for a given project(s). 
  • Ensures the cut list is complete and up to Bednark Standards before passing off to the next step in production.
  • Responsible for tracking and staying within budgeted labor hours for each project. 
  • Maintains knowledge of the assigned projects’ deliverables, including appropriate fabrication and finish methods. 
  • Leads by example in fostering a positive, solution-oriented teamwork environment. 
  • Regularly reviews hits/misses of projects with Operators and provides constructive feedback and direction regarding their assigned tasks. 

Systems and Safety 
  • Perform required maintenance as scheduled to ensure the functional performance of equipment. Install and maintain replacement systems and hardware as required.
  • Work with Engineers and other departments to develop waterjet processes for new parts or new repairs.
  • Responsible for ordering any project-specific material or hardware through the Purchasing Manager
  • Responsible for maintaining clear and efficient communication channels through Asana 
  • Maintains strong knowledge of in-line assembly processes, systems, and tools. 
  • Collaborates in the upkeep of all department-specific tools, machines, and consumables 
  • Assists in introducing all new hires to safety standards, systems, and protocols 
  • Maintains a clean, orderly, and safe work environment in all machining, assembly and tech-up spaces 
  • Regularly reviews inventory and department set-up to consolidate and improve the layout of assembly and tech-up spaces, as well as storage of tools, hardware, consumables and materials to maximize productivity and safety
  • Maintains a safe, healthy, and judgment-free working environment
Required skill-sets: 
  • Knowledge in the use of precision measuring instruments and the application of such instruments. Instruments should include but not limited to calipers, ID and OD micrometers, depth gauges, and scales.
  • Must possess basic math skills to include but not limited to adding, subtracting, multiplication, division, geometry and algebra for the purpose of calculating material fabrication.
  • Understanding of technical drawings and geometric tolerance interpretation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficient in Autocad or similar CAD software.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team-oriented environment.
  • Must have regular and punctual attendance.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
