Bednark Studio Inc. is Hiring a Metal Fabrication Department Manager Near Brooklyn, NY

For every project, the Metal Department Manager oversees a team of Lead Fabricators, Fabricators, and Assistant Fabricators, and the shop spaces they work in to safely and efficiently complete the scope of work assigned to their department.
The Metal Department Manager creates and communicates an actionable plan for production, assembling, and organizing the necessary materials, hardware, and tools to ensure that all assigned elements are built to spec, to quality standards, and to the build schedule.
The Metal Department Manager is responsible for flagging issues and updates regularly and clearly to the Project Management Office, and other Department Managers to ensure a smooth and efficient production process.
Responsibilities:
  • Manages the department’s daily operations -- assigns build leads, build teams, and project tasks according to employees’ skills, performance and scheduling.
  • Check-in regularly with build teams for productivity, quality, and efficiency standards.
  • Maintains clear and efficient communication channels with management and other departments through project management software - Asana.
  • Regularly reviews hits/misses of projects with fabricators and provides constructive feedback and direction regarding their fabrication, organization and management skills.
  • Plays a key role in talent acquisition, interviewing, and termination process.
  • Introduces all new hires to best build and work practices, quality standards, labeling requirements, and labor and material cost reporting procedures.
  • Manages and distributes weekly fabricator work schedules and verifies and reports weekly purchasing and labor hours by project cost center.
  • Reviews Technical drawings -- flagging and clarifying any issues before distributing drawings to the build team.
  • Reviews project communications in Asana regularly for updates or changes -- flagging and clarifying any issues with the Project Management office before passing information or updates on to the build team.
  • Reviews project goals and analyzes available resources and best construction practices to determine and assign the most efficient build processes.
  • Reviews project build processes with the Director of Fabrication to determine all material, hardware, consumable, and tooling needs, requesting all specialty purchasing through the Director of Fabrication for approval.
  • Reviews project priorities and labor needs regularly to determine build schedule benchmarks and crew scheduling.
  • Attends the build kick-off meeting for each project reviewing the scope of work, drafting, production benchmarks, and deadlines, finish and quality standards, and all assigned materials, hardware, and resources.
  • Attends Engineering Meetings and Pre-Production meetings as needed to consult on potential red flags.
  • Assists Build Leads and Fabricators with problem-solving and makes decisions on ways to improve product quality and build efficiency.
  • Checks all fabrication elements for accuracy and quality with Build Leads and Fabricators before releasing them for the next step in the production.
  • Records and communicates status updates and task completions consistently with the project team using Asana.
  • Assists in planning and forecasting of new projects.
  • Introduces all new hires to Metal Department safety standards, systems, and protocols.
  • Regularly reviews inventory and department set-up to consolidate and improve the layout of assembly and tech-up spaces, as well as storage of tools, hardware, consumables and materials to maximize productivity and safety.
  • Ensures all machinery and tools are maintained in good working condition, clean and serviced on a consistent basis.
  • Maintains a safe, healthy, and judgment-free working environment
