Bedford County Commissioners is Hiring a Court Reporter Near Bedford, PA

The Bedford County Court Administration Office is currently seeking a Court Reporter. This is a full-time position, with benefits including: Comprehensive Medical Plans, Vision, Dental, Retirement, Paid Time Off and Life Insurance.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

Records verbatim on a stenographic machine all court proceedings; transcribes notes and prepares same for distribution and filing; does related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF POSITION: An employee in this class is responsible for taking verbatim stenographic notes of testimony at legal proceedings and preparing complete and accurate transcriptions of such proceedings. An unusually high degree of stenographic competence is required, and work is performed in accordance with established procedures of such hearings. The employee is expected to prepare a complete and accurate record of such proceedings. Work assignments are made by the Court Administrator.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Illustrative Only)

1. Performs technical stenographic duties in taking and transcribing verbatim notes of legal proceedings;

2. Takes and transcribes accurately verbatim testimony on civil and criminal cases, and prepares a omplete and accurate record of such proceedings;

3. Transcribe, edit, and proofread all transcripts and orders;

4. Electronically deliver transcripts and orders to all appropriate parties and prints when necessary;

5. Certifies the accuracy of transcriptions and prepares certified copies;

6. Prepares, copies, and sends transcripts;

7. Takes and transcribes notes of material dictated by judges or others;

8. Files, indexes, answers correspondence and perform various typing assignments;

9. Reads, when called upon, from stenographic notes in the Courtroom or the Judge’s Chambers;

10. Filing and storage of raw stenographic notes and final transcripts for at least seven years after date of court proceedings;

11. Files original transcripts in the Prothonotary’s office for recording and permanent retention;

12. Complies with all court regulations and orders and maintains the highest ethical standards required by the Code of Conduct for employees of The Unified Judicial System;

13. The Court Reporter assigned to Family Court coordinates with Judicial Staff to ensure coverage for the responsibility of entering PFA orders in to the PFAD system;

14. Maintains files.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Thorough knowledge of English usage, punctuation, spelling and varied technical terminology; some knowledge of the conduct of legal proceedings; skill in taking and transcribing verbatim dictation for sustained periods of time, received at rapid and changing speeds and inflections from several persons. Qualifies and maintains at least the minimum standards of proficiency required under The Pennsylvania Rules of Judicial Administration.

QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or equivalent, plus 2-year degree in court reporting training and certification; computer skills required.

SPECIAL NEEDS:

Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to travel if required to attend meetings and seminars.
