Project Overview:

Bechtel is designing, constructing, and commissioning the world’s largest radioactive waste treatment plant for the U.S. Department of Energy at the Hanford Site in southeastern Washington state. The Hanford Tank Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant will use vitrification technology to process and solidify 56 million gallons (210 million liters) of radioactive and chemical waste stored at the Hanford site, which is a byproduct of plutonium production during World War II and the Cold War era.

The project is the largest undertaking of its kind and one of DOE’s most technically challenging cleanup projects. Its construction spans 65 acres (26 hectares) with four major nuclear facilities – Pretreatment, Low-Activity Waste Vitrification, High-Level Waste Vitrification and Analytical Laboratory – as well as operations and maintenance buildings, utilities, other support facilities.

The Waste Treatment Completion Company (WTCC) is a limited liability corporation created by Bechtel National Inc. (BNI) and Amentum. WTCC is a subcontractor to BNI, the prime contractor, to deliver the construction, turnover, startup, and commissioning activities for the WTP project.

This position is located at the Construction Site (22 miles north of Richland) and works a 4 x 10 schedule, M-Th, 6:30am to 5:00pm. Selected applicant needs to be able and willing to work night shift (5:30pm to 4:00am) and weekends as needed.


Job Summary:

Supervises and directs craft activities, and others, as assigned. Performs general functions inherent in all supervisory field positions. Coordinates with other Construction Supervisors and other Area Leads to coordinate priorities, deliveries, and site overall arrangement requirements.


Major Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for field construction operations within assigned discipline or area: safety, quality, and performance.
  • Safely directs assigned construction work in accordance with Bechtel’s safety program.
  • Approves craft time records using established automated tools.
  • Responsible for the implementation of corporate/project policies, procedures, and instructions within assigned operations.
  • Coordinates activities with other disciplines or areas, and clients' resident representatives as instructed by construction management.
  • Performs employee reviews and identifies Training and Development opportunities for subordinate personnel.
  • Assesses needs and identifies craft training requirements.
  • Responsible for field construction operations and general site coordination and support, may include, but not limited to:
    • Scaffolding
    • Tool room management & warehousing coordination
    • Janitorial services
    • Development and support of temporary facilities
  • Determines craft staffing requirements to support indirect activities.
  • Works with Site Supervision, Field Engineering, and Project Controls to manage indirect schedules, construction methods, and procedures.
  • Prepares reports and forecasts, including a summary of construction progress, craft personnel forecasts, and expenditures forecast.
  • Supervises and directs craft in construction activities within indirects. and works in accordance with Bechtel’s Environmental Safety and Health (ES&H) program.
  • Responsible for the implementation of corporate/project policies, procedures, and instructions within assigned operations.
  • Monitor job site work rule compliance.
  • Ensures that all Bechtel, State, and Federal safety codes, requirements, and standards are being complied within the assigned area of responsibility.
  • Directs the preparation of requisitions for field procured materials, material substitution, services, and equipment.
  • Ensures zero accident philosophy and requirements are implemented and adhered to by craft and others when in the operational area, and tools and equipment are in safe condition and operated safely.


Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited program and 8-10 years of relevant work experience, or in lieu of degree, 12-14 years of relevant work experience.
  • Must be physically able to conduct field inspections and participate in project walk-downs which may require the following activities: extensive walking in and around a construction site, climbing ladders, climbing scaffolding, using fall protection and other personal protective equipment (PPE), walking on elevated platforms, walking on uneven surfaces, and maneuvering around very small and/or confined spaces.
  • Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen, physical, and background check which includes verification of employment and education.
  • Must be able to obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the Hanford Site.
  • Must possess the right to work and remain in the US without sponsorship.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience working with and supervising USA Building Trade Unions and craft professionals.
  • Knowledge of a single or multi-discipline construction or engineering operation relating to field activities.
  • Computer literate in manual craft timekeeping, word processing, spreadsheet, and other standard applications.
  • Knowledge and experience of DOE, DOD, and/or commercial nuclear construction projects is required.
  • Candidates shall be self-starters, highly motivated, require little supervision, and be able to excel in a team environment.
  • Candidates shall have previous experience leading, mentoring, and managing large Construction Teams.
  • Knowledge of Bechtel’s “Zero Accident” safety program.
  • Experience in coordination of material deliveries from satellite locations to the primary project.
  • Knowledge of construction distributable/indirect support operations.
  • Experience in inventory management of materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Experience in tool management and working knowledge of typical tools utilized by multiple craft disciplines.
  • Knowledge of local labor laws and issues.
  • Knowledge and experience of the ISMS guiding principles and core functions.
  • Working knowledge of environmental compliance laws and requirements.
  • Working knowledge of government compliance standards.
