Season Starts Full Time Mid-May

Duties

Baggage and cargo handlers must load and unload passenger baggage, food supplies, commercial freight, or other cargo out of passenger vehicles and into luggage shipping containers.

Assist the Dock Manager with the orderliness of passengers, vehicles, and freight on the dock and maintain the cleanliness of dock area, enforcing company policy as required.

Cheerfully greet all vehicles and customers arriving in the dock area and direct them as necessary.

Control /secure luggage rack.

Manage the loading and unloading of freight onto the rack.

Familiarize self with and follow all safety and security policies

Working as a baggage or cargo handler is a good way to break into the Maritime industry and eventually move into Deckhand role. Four days on, then three days off is not uncommon for baggage and cargo handling positions. Many people enjoy this as it offers them several days off in a row.

Challenges

The primary challenge for baggage and cargo handlers is the physical demand of the job. Handlers must also ensure that the loads are properly stacked to prevent them from shifting during transport which can be very dangerous.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent. Previous shipping experience is often not necessary but may be preferred.

Requirements

This physically demanding job requires heavy lifting of up to 70 pounds or more and must be done quickly and efficiently for extended periods of time. A valid driver’s license is necessary as is a clean driving record. Minimum age for this position is usually 16.

Pay: $13.00 - $16.00 per hour

• Holidays
• Monday to Friday
• Weekends as needed
