PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Work with General Maintenance Mechanic 1 to perform skilled work in the repair, maintenance, roofing, and construction (rough and finish) of carpentry and other maintenance related systems using standard trade practices.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Ability to read, write, and have communication skills necessary to converse with various types of persons
  • Must maintain a valid Texas Driver License and insurable driving record

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the work
  • Thorough knowledge of construction, routine maintenance, and repair procedures involving roofing, carpentry, and concrete crafts using standard trade practices
  • Ability to follow oral and written directions and to work from blueprints and sketches
  • Considerable skills in locating and correcting defects related to building structures and other building maintenance issues
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers
  • Ability to operate hand and power tools
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to work at heights is required
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment preferred

Experience:

  • Must have general knowledge of carpentry work

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Maintenance and Repairs

  1. Construct, as directed, and maintain exterior and interior systems involved in carpentry related tasks in the district including but not limited to canopies, roofing, walls, foundations, fencing, ceilings, and flooring.
  2. Inspect building exterior and interior, playground equipment, and grounds; perform maintenance and minor repairs as needed.
  3. Detect and report needed repairs on building structures, including lockers, furniture, equipment, and flooring.
  4. Construct and install new windows and doors, replace glass in existing windows and doors.
  5. Assist with the installation of portable buildings as needed.
  6. Assist with striping and painting parking lots and curbs as needed.
  7. Perform scheduled and emergency repairs and/or maintenance as directed.
  8. Receive and complete work orders as directed by maintenance supervisor.
  9. Perform scheduled and emergency repairs and/or maintenance as directed. Work with other crafts and departments as assigned. Receive instructions from other department supervisors as required.
  10. Meet performance standards.
  11. Manage assigned work orders, maintaining material and labor costs applied to each job.
  12. Show accountability for supplies purchased or issued.
  13. Fabricate and erect such items as office partitions, hang doors, construct office/factory racks, shelves, cabinets, etc.
  14. Move, install, assemble, and repair all school furniture and playground equipment as needed.
  15. May act in lead position unless accompanied by other designated Class I or Class II employee.
  16. Inspect all job assignments upon completion for perfection. Clean areas after project completion.
  17. Respond to emergency calls as needed.
  18. Perform operator maintenance on assigned vehicles, tools, and equipment to ensure continued serviceability.

Safety

  1. Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting and climbing. Operate equipment and use tools according to established safety procedures.
  2. Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.
  3. Maintain tools and equipment; perform preventive maintenance as required.
  4. Maintain a clean, safe, and well-organized facility and work area.

Other

  1. This position may require evening maintenance and or adjusted hours.
  2. Attendance is a requirement of this position.
  3. Carry out all duties in accordance with BISD Board of Education policies and administrative regulations.
  4. Maintain a high personal standard in the following areas: attitude, cooperation, dependability, judgment, initiative, self-improvement, and as a role model for students.
  5. Perform other duties as assigned.

 EQUIPMENT USED:

  • Vehicle, various saws, routers, drill presses, planners, forklift, sanders, cement mixers, hammer drill, Hilti grinder, small hand tools, power tools, and measuring tools

  • Heavy lifting with minimum floor to knuckle lift of 125 lbs

Environmental Demands

  • Occasional prolonged or irregular hours of work
  • Work outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces
  • Frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures; excessive humidity and dampness
  • Exposure to noise, vibration, and electrical hazards
  • Exposure to a small amount of fumes from silicone, glues, and adhesives
  • Exposure to dust, smoke, gas, solvents, grease, and oil
  • Work with ladders, scaffolds and personnel lifts
  • Work around machinery with moving parts; work around moving objects and vehicles
  • May work alone
  • Frequent districtwide travel
