**Pre-Clinical Mfg. & Pilot Plant Manager**

at Beam Therapeutics Cambridge, MA Beam is seeking a dynamic individual to help lead our Pilot Plant and Pre-Clinical Manufacturing Team. This individual will be responsible for building a nimble and flexible manufacturing and development space where Beam enables innovation, supports process scale-up, and produces pDNA, mRNA, and LNPs to drive our research & development engine at Beam Therapeutics. This individual and the team will be responsible for implementation of automated production to support high throughput small scale manufacturing, process development, and scale-up activities ahead of technology transfer. The team will perform piloting of novel process operations, help drive technology development and innovation, as well as executing routine manufacturing activities to produce material for research and IND enabling studies.

**Primary Responsibilities:**

* Lead and manage a team of research associates, scientists, and engineers to deliver best in class processes and innovation

* Project lead for establishing Pilot Plant operations including building out the team to support process scale-up, implementation of new processes, and execution at GMP scale.

* Optimize pilot plant and pre-clinical production performance to allow for fast, flexible processing of multiple manufacturing processes including plasmid DNA prep, mRNA transcription and purification, and LNP formulation, and oligonucleotide synthesis.

* Build organizational structure and capability that anticipates and adapts in a dynamic business environment.

* Ensure processes are robust, scalable, and ready for execution in a cGMP environment.

* Drive innovation with process development and automation partners establishing high throughput automated, pDNA, mRNA and LNP processing.

* Accountable for annual expense, capital, and headcount budgeting.

* Accountable for forecasting expense, capital, and headcount budget changes as business needs changes.

* Build and maintain the schedule for routine production that supports research and development, IND-enabling studies, and development/engineering activities taking place externally to the site.

* Build relationships with key stakeholders to ensure material requirements are met. (Alliance management)

* Support technology transfer to internal and external partners as necessary.

* Executes experiments and production with the team as necessary.

**Qualifications:**

* BS/MS/PhD in Life Sciences, Chemical, Mechanical, Bio-Engineering or related discipline.

* BS with 14 or more years/ MS with 12 or more years/ PhD with 5 or more years of experience in manufacturing, process development, and/or engineering.

* 5 years in a leadership role that includes the management of people, assigning tasks, defining goals, facilitating reviews, and communicating upward and outward within an engineering, development, or manufacturing

* Experience in implementation of process improvements, innovation in a technical discipline, and operational excellence.

* Ability to communicate effectively with strong communication skills and a collegial personality.

* Proven experience interacting with internal and external partners. (Alliance Management)

* Demonstrate strong relevant subject matter expertise

* Drive to succeed in a team-oriented matrixed early-stage company.

* Experience in plasmid DNA, mRNA, LNP, or oligonucleotide synthesis

* Travel may be required on some frequency.
