Summary

Reports to the Director of Cardio-Pulmonary Rehab. Participates in the development of the Interdisciplinary Treatment Plan to ensure the quality and clinical effectiveness of the Program and the safety of each participant is complete. In addition, will implement fitness program of traditional cardio-pulmonary rehab within established operational policies and procedures. Assists with coordination of day-to-day operations by ensuring sufficient staff coverage for fitness area, special programs, events and classes.

Standard of Care:

    • Organizes, supervises and delivers the exercise portion of the Program per guidelines and protocol.
    • Perform body composition/BMI/anthropometric and other assessments per protocol.
    • Provides individual exercise prescriptions based on ACSM guidelines for each participant.
    • Updates exercise prescriptions after each graded exercise test or as necessary.
    • Documents participant exercise data as required.
    • Participates in the development of the interdisciplinary treatment plan for each participant.
    • Participates in the monitoring, documentation, and communication of the participant’s response to the interdisciplinary treatment plan the Traditional Cardio-Pulmonary Rehab.
    • Assists RN with any education of participants concerning proper use of exercise equipment.
    • Facilitates a high level of participant satisfaction.
    • Attend and participates in weekly clinical team meetings.
    • Answering participant questions and inquiries about the specifics of the program to achieve the greatest physical benefit.
    • Demonstrating correct exercise form and technique while working with and monitoring clients.
    • Instructs participants on proper implementation, physical mechanics, execution and progression in the Program.
    • Assists in traditional cardio-pulmonary department as needed.
    • Performs patient assessments with designing individual cardiopulmonary treatment plans.

Maintains Equipment:

    • Understands the use and safety techniques of exercise equipment.
    • Maintains exercise equipment, including cleaning and reporting of problems.
    • Assists with evaluation checks as required.

Emergency Procedures:

    • Reports any clinical change of participant condition to the Medical Director.
    • Responds immediately to emergency situations within the department.
    • Attends quarterly mock code sessions.
    • Identifies dysrhythmias and reports to the Medical Director.

Exercise Education:

    • Delivers Program exercise guidelines lectures per protocol and educational in-services as needed.
    • Provides exercise counseling on an individual basis as needed.
    • Formulates Individualized exercise prescriptions.

Personal Development:

    • Personally models the Program by embodying its principles, philosophy, and practices.
    • Understands and complies with policies, procedures, and mission statement of EGH.
    • Completes skills verification to assure competency in delivery of care.

ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:

  • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
  • Complies with established organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience

The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology or Physical Therapy required. Two years of Cardiac rehabilitation experience preferred. Clinical certification within one year of employment must be obtained in American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist (RCEP), or AACVPR Certified Cardiac Rehabilitation Professional (CCRP). Current certification in BCLS (CPR) required. Current certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred. Will need to obtain within 90 days of employment if not currently ACLS certified.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Technical knowledge of exercise programming, selection and progression to achieve maximum results.
  • Working knowledge of exercise equipment, set up, and maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of EKG rhythms and the identification of normal and abnormal responses.
  • Technical expertise to demonstrate a variety of correct exercise forms and techniques in accordance with nationally approved standards.
  • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written) necessary to interact effectively with a diverse group of clients, members and visitors in a professional, courteous, friendly and sincere manner.
  • Good computer skills.
  • Excellent public speaking skills.
  • Knowledge of adult education and coaching principles.
  • Desire and willingness to collaborate as a member of a high-functioning interdisciplinary team that supports personal transformation.

Working Conditions

  • Works in an athletic club environment with frequent interruptions, the potential of increased noise levels and some discomfort due to cool or warm temperatures.
  • Requires the ability to work flexible hours.
  • Requires stamina to work effectively under adverse condition (i.e., determine need for and administer CPR).
  • Work may require occasional trips outside the hospital to administer services to the community.

Physical Demands

  • Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e., to walk/stand for prolonged periods of time, push carts/wheelchairs up to 50 pounds, to position/lift patients at a maximum of 35 pounds unassisted, over 35 pounds requires assistance, provide CPR, etc.) to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Finger and hand dexterity to manipulate instruments and equipment.
  • Good eyesight and hearing to detect changes in participant condition.
