General Description:

The Baylor University Libraries is pleased to announce an exciting opportunity to join our team of librarians, serving as the Catalog and Database Maintenance Librarian. We’re looking for a detail-oriented individual with strong problem-solving skills to lead the print monograph and database maintenance teams within Cataloging and Metadata Services. The person in this position supports access to scholarly resources by leading and managing projects and processes that improve the quality of the metadata in the library database, as well as support strategic library deaccessioning initiatives. This is a full-time, 12-month, on-site academic-professional position with excellent benefits and faculty status.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Leads database maintenance and authority control/identity management processes, including migration clean-up and other projects that correct inaccuracies in the library system. Coordinating with other library personnel on withdrawal, inventory, and shifting projects, ensuring that metadata records are properly updated in Alma and WorldCat. Leads the database maintenance team, setting work priorities for and evaluating the work of the team. Provides training and writes and maintains documentation for database maintenance and authority control processes.
  • Provides leadership on print monograph cataloging, including performing original and complex copy cataloging of print monographs for the Moody and Jones general collections, overseeing the general collection print copy cataloging workflows, leading the training of Cataloging and Metadata Services personnel on print monograph cataloging, writing and maintaining relevant documentation, and keeping the unit appraised of trends and developments in monograph cataloging.
  • Collaborates with the Electronic Resources and Serials Catalog Librarian to co-lead the e-book cataloging and batch record processing team, which includes setting work priorities for and evaluating the work of the team; managing the processing of bibliographic record sets, including the analysis, editing, and loading of bibliographic records for electronic resources, and activating and maintaining relevant Alma Community Zone collections, in collaboration with acquisitions and e-resource management personnel.
  • Collaborates with the other Cataloging and Metadata Services librarians to plan, implement, maintain, and evaluate cataloging operations and workflows to ensure effective and efficient description and discovery of library materials.
  • Serves as a resource for database maintenance, complex cataloging, and authority control questions and similar issues throughout the University Libraries.
  • Helps extract and prepare statistical and holdings reports for various agencies for annual reports and special projects.
  • Assists the Director of Cataloging and Metadata Services in the leadership and overall direction of CAMS.
  • Engages in library and Institution-wide initiatives through committees and task forces, includes serving on Library and University committees as appointed or elected.
  • Pursues professional development opportunities through local, regional, and national conferences, meetings, and workshops and involvement in professional organizations.
  • Meets University and Library expectations for service and scholarship, including participation in the academic library community through research, presentations, and writing on topics related to areas of responsibility.

Qualifications

Required Job Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library program or a recognized equivalent program.
  • Working knowledge of monograph cataloging.
  • Familiarity with the principles of authority control/identity management.
  • Familiarity with database maintenance practices.
  • Experience with library systems and automation tools.
  • Knowledge of RDA, LC-PCC PS, IFLA-LRM, LC classification, LCSH, LCGFT, and MARC 21 formats.
  • Demonstrated awareness of national trends and developments in cataloging and metadata, as well as general trends in electronic resources, discovery, and user behavior to the extent those areas affect the cataloging of electronic and continuing resources.
  • Eagerness to learn emerging and evolving technologies on a continual basis.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills, attention to detail, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong organizational skills demonstrated by proven success in prioritizing work and managing multiple tasks and projects.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact successfully with diverse personalities and perspectives.
  • Strong commitment to serving constituents and the larger community.
  • Ability to interact effectively with a diverse campus population.

Desired Job Qualifications:

  • Two or more years of relevant library technical services experience.
  • Experience with original cataloging.
  • Experience with batch editing and loading MARC records.
  • Experience with authority control/identity management practices.
  • Experience with Ex Libris Alma strongly preferred.
  • Experience using OCLC Connexion or WorldShare Record Manager.
  • Knowledge of data manipulation tools, such as MarcEdit, OpenRefine, and MS Excel.
  • Familiarity with knowledgebases used to manage electronic resources, such as the Alma Community Zone and/or the WorldShare Collection Manager.
  • Knowledge of Linked Data (such as BIBFRAME) and other emerging non-traditional cataloging standards and schemas.
  • Evidence of working strategically across departmental lines to successfully address changing environments.
  • Experience managing projects.
  • Ability to see the big picture and implement specific, granular solutions.
  • Bibliographic knowledge of one or more languages in addition to English.
