Laboratory Director - Orlando Regional Medical Center

Job Description
The Laboratory Director oversees all functions, activities and services conducted in the Laboratory Departments of all Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical Center (OHORMC) facilities. The position serves to create a homogeneous lab culture, streamline processes, improve efficiencies and fully integrate lab practices at all OHORMC facilities and outreach functions. The lab responsibilities include provision of reference lab functions for the health system as well as core lab function for the downtown campus.

  • Responsible for planning, leading, organizing, and managing Laboratory Services for all inpatient, outpatient, and outreach laboratory services for Orlando Regional Medical Center.
  • Ensures quality laboratory services at all sites through effective management of personnel, supplies, equipment and other resources.
  • Direct collaboration with Pathologists, physician partners, and laboratory colleagues to result in improved operations and workflow at all locations.
  • Provides proper financial direction through the development of budget, staffing and charge structure that meets the overall strategic goals of Orlando Health.
  • Plans, promotes high ethical work practices.
  • Ensures that all areas implement the laboratory compliance program.
  • Approves the development of new tests, the purchase of supplies and the addition of laboratory personnel. Plans, evaluates, initiates and makes recommendations for new equipment purchases capital purchases/contracts.
  • Works with the Purchasing department in the negotiations of vendor contracts and cost containment measures.
  • Oversees the selection, evaluation and discipline of team members by direct reports to assure a continued high level of competency.
  • Develops and implements an effective quality management program including quality assurance and process improvement plans with the medical director.
  • Promotes a culture that emphasizes corporation and effective communication.
  • Develops annual Department Operational goals and objectives for each site consistent with strategic goals and objectives.
  • Aligns goals, strategies and objectives of the laboratory with the system’s and Orlando Regional Medical Center.
  • Establishes an effective relationship with the clinical staff, administration and other services within the organization.
  • Maintains competency in management skills and knowledge of current laboratory technology and laboratory information systems.
  • Conducts regularly scheduled meetings with the Leadership team and attends section meetings.
  • Manages various human resources functions including hiring, work assignments, coaching plans, and performance counseling.
  • Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
  • Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology, Laboratory Science, or other healthcare related field is required.

Licensure/Certification

  • Must be licensed by the Florida Department of Regulations at a Laboratory Supervisory level (renewed every two years).
  • Must hold a National recognized certification (MT, ASCP or CLS, NCA) by the American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP).

Experience

  • Minimum of Seven (7) years of Clinical Laboratory experience is required.
  • Five (5) years of Hospital Laboratory experience, at a Supervisor level or above, is required.
