Job Summary:

As a second press operator, your role is to assist printing machine operators in a press room. You will operate an industrial press machine, inspect products compared to the provided layouts and proofs, and maintain and ensure quality prints for products such as magazines, books, and newspapers. Additional responsibilities include performing machine maintenance, troubleshooting issues, and adjusting equipment as needed. You are expected to follow all plant policies and safety procedures while ensuring quality service and efficient production. You will also complete paperwork and perform any required data entry related to job tasks. Your other duties are to install, clean, and adjust the rollers and the press.

“Second Operator” Press Operator Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ability to read and understand the job jacket to ensure production is run according to specification.
  • Must have the ability and knowledge to act as second in command; first in command if the need arises.
  • Assist in machine make-ready to set it up to run proper production, quality, and speed.
  • Performs quality checks according to established procedures to ensure all Quality Standards (Color matches and Registration) are being met.
  • Performs machine troubleshooting by adjusting and correcting quality or efficiency problems related to machine set up or mechanical defects.
  • Keeps all waste and scrap within company guidelines.
  • Assist in training new employees and directing the daily duties of subordinates.
  • Makes sure correct inks are in place and are changed out when there is a copy change made on the Press.
  • Capable of documenting tasks and processes to aid in improving.
  • Stages rolls of paper at the back of the press using an air activated roll pusher, manually pushing rolls into final position.
  • Performs other related duties to contribute to the success of the operation as assigned by supervision.
  • Must have the ability to document and/or ensure accurate counts.
  • Must understand blanket and plate cylinders as well as the packing over bearer theory.
  • Must know how to layout plates and hang them according to each job.
  • Must be willing and ready to always assist the Lead Pressman.
  • Must have a positive attitude and want to be part of a team.

“Second Man” Pressman Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Basic Computer Skills (Press controls, ink system)
  • Understanding of Machinery (Hydraulics and Pneumatics).
  • Ability to use hand tools to remove, install, and adjust parts of machine.
  • Ability to perform simple calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) and applies good mathematical reasoning.

· Must understand the DCOS system & the web printing process on the DGM 440 press.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively with little to no supervision.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to be detail oriented.
  • Positive work attitude and demonstrated willingness to cooperate.
  • Required to stand to perform all duties of the job.
  • Pushing/moving of raw material and equipment required.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $24.00 - $30.00 per hour
