Bus/Van Mechanic I
Supervised By: Facilities and Fleet Maintenance Manager
Supervises: No Supervisory Responsibility
Payscale: Per Collective Bargaining Agreement
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of the Facilities and Fleet Maintenance Manager, and under the guidance of the Fleet Service Coordinator, performs highly skilled service, diagnostic mechanical and repair work on BATA buses, vans, and related service vehicles. The Bus/Van Mechanic I, will be responsible for maintaining accurate information in the daily pass down, fleet status and the bus repair backlogs.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Mechanics are responsible for inspection, preventive maintenance and repair of gas, diesel, propane, and potentially other renewable energy vehicles. Duties include running diagnostic tests on vehicles, test-driving vehicles to diagnose performance, identifying worn and damaged parts and maintaining detailed records of the vehicles they have serviced.
Works in a team-based, collaborative environment providing a substantive level of excellent customer service at all times.
Mechanics are required to maintain their State or ASE certifications relevant to their job position as well as the tools necessary to complete their work.
Performs necessary inspections, and routine maintenance within the guidelines of MDOT Service standards and BATA SOPs as programmed through a Computerized Maintenance Management Software and in collaboration with the Fleet Service Coordinator.
Manages the availability of the fleet by maintaining a full knowledge of BATA service needs and applying that knowledge to bus assignments in the Computer Management System Board
Work orders, parts posting, detailed diagnostic and repair notations and time management will be tracked through the use of CMMS software.
Performs complex troubleshooting and diagnosis on a wide variety of vehicles with the use of various electronic scan tool software systems.
Operates standard repair shop equipment such as welders, grinders, drill presses, bandsaws and a wide variety of power tools as well as a tire machine, balancer, flange tools, hydraulic porta power, hydraulic lifts, fork-lift, etc.
Keeps shop equipment operating by following operating instructions and performing required preventive maintenance, troubleshooting breakdowns, and maintaining vehicle condition.
Corrects vehicle deficiencies by removing, repairing, adjusting, overhauling, assembling, disassembling, and replacing major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, parts, or systems, such as, power and drive trains, electrical, air conditioning, fuel, emission, brake, steering, hydraulics, transmissions, brake systems, electrical systems, cooling systems, and steering systems,etc.
Maintains a clean work area, adheres to safe operating procedures.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Class B Michigan CDL license with endorsements for air brake and passenger operation and Michigan State Mechanic Certification within thirty days of hire.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Physical Mobility - Ability to walk extended distances and climb stairs and ramps to access all areas. Ability to stand for extended periods of time. Ability to lift up to 100lbs.
Vision and Sight - Ability to read instructions, directions, and similar written information in letters, memoranda, forms, and other documents and operate computerized data collection and diagnostic software.
Agility/Movement - Ability to lift, push, pull, and manipulate vehicles, tools, equipment, supplies, and other objects often weighing upwards to 100 pounds. Bending, twisting, kneeling to work in restrictive bus interiors.
Work Environment- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, outside weather conditions, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
