Title: Assistant in Instruction- Organic Chemistry

Position Purpose:

The Assistant in Instruction in Chemistry and Biochemistry is primarily responsible for the Organic Chemistry Laboratory, including evidence based curriculum development, teaching laboratory sections, and supervising teaching assistants. The Assistant in Instruction will also assist in preparation of other 200- level laboratory spaces, including Analytical Chemistry and Inorganic Chemistry. In addition, this position will be responsible for maintaining the departmental 400-MHz NMR spectrometer.

Job Duties:

  • Design and update the Organic Chemistry Laboratory curriculum including annual editing and updating of the Organic Chemistry Lab Manual.
  • Teach at least two Organic Chemistry Lab Sections per semester.
  • Train and supervise the TA’s for the Organic Chemistry laboratories.
  • Maintain the learning management system and grades for the Organic Chemistry laboratories and occasional assistance with grading other 200-level lab courses.
  • Maintain all inventory for the Organic and advanced chemistry laboratories, including glassware, supplies, equipment, and chemicals.
  • Oversee lab set-up and waste management for the Organic Chemistry Lab and other 200- level labs, including the Analytical Chemistry Lab and the Inorganic Chemistry Lab.
  • Maintenance and upkeep of the new departmental 400-MHz Bruker NMR spectrometer, including nitrogen and helium fills.
    Duties may change over time in response to curricular or departmental needs.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education

Post-graduate degree in Chemistry or closely related area or at least three years comparable work experience.

Experience

Teaching experience in organic chemistry labs preferred.

  • Ability to be flexible and learn new tools and techniques as needed.
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision to organize and prioritize multiple tasks and demands within established guidelines of the curriculum.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with knowledge of scientific writing style.
