This is a continuous examination process and may close at any time, with little or no notice. Qualified applicants submitting applications after the review date will be considered in the next examination process. This list will be utilized to fill any vacancies that may occur during the one year life of the Eligibility List, which may include temporary positions. The list generated from this recruitment will be used to fill both substitute and permanent vacancies in the District.
BASIC FUNCTION:
 
Under direction of an assigned supervisor, assists in cooking main dishes, meats and vegetables; baking bread and desserts and serving food at an assigned school site or food service facility; maintains food serving and preparation areas in a clean and sanitary condition; sells tickets, food, snacks and beverages to students, faculty and staff.
 
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
 
Incumbents in the Child Nutrition Assistant II class perform lead duties in the absence of the Child Nutrition Manager and are assigned greater responsibility in cooking main dishes, meats and vegetables, and baking breads and desserts.
 
Child Nutrition Assistant I incumbents perform routine preparation and serving of food in a school cafeteria or snack bar and wash dishes, trays, utensils and other food service items and facilities.Assist in cooking main dishes, meats, vegetables, rice, sauces, gravies and other dishes; bake bread, cakes, cookies and desserts; prepare foods in accordance with prepared menus and recipes and established time lines.
 
Provide training and work direction to food service personnel in the absence of the Child Nutrition Manager or as assigned.
 
Assist with the preparation of breakfast; prepare egg mixtures and toast and heat sausages, pancakes, waffles and French toast; prepare and set out fruit juices and milk.

Wash and prepare eating and serving areas; wash dishes, trays, pots, pans, utensils and food service equipment; clean and sanitize facilities according to established health regulations and standards.
 
Set up steam tables; set out trays, utensils, food and beverages; counts trays and remaining beverages after meals.
 
Portion out, box and serve food to students and staff according to established guidelines.
 
Prepare fruits, vegetables and other foods for serving or cooking; assists in preparing foods such as salads, salad dressings, soups, French fries, hot and cold sandwiches, sliced meats and sliced or grated cheese.
 
Prepare and sell a variety of hot and cold foods and beverages at a high school snack bar.
 
Operate and sanitize a variety of standard kitchen equipment such as dishwashers, mixers, slicers, graters, can openers, steam tables, ovens and deep fryers.
 
Assist in receiving food deliveries and store food items according to established procedures; assist with periodic inventory; assist in storing unused food and supplies according to established procedures
 
Assist with counting food items served and money received; collect money and tickets for lunches as assigned; verify qualifications for students receiving free and reduced meals; operate cash register or make proper change from cash box; count money and return money, food and beverages to cafeteria following meal periods
 
Perform related duties as assigned.EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: one (1) year of quantity food preparation experience.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
Must have and maintain throughout employment a current Food Safety Manager Certificate from a nationally recognized Food Safety program.APPLICATION

SCREENING PROCESS

Examination dates may change or be canceled without advance notice. 

The examination may consist of any combination of a(n): training and experience (T&E) evaluation, written knowledge test, structured panel interview, situational judgement interview, or other type of exam of fitness for duty. All parts of the examination process are job related. A passing score must be attained on each portion of the exam to advance to the next stage and ultimate placement on an eligibility list.

EXAM PROTESTS

Protest of any part of the exam process must be in writing and submitted to the Personnel Director no later than five (5) working days from the date you participated in the exam. Any protest must include rationale to support the protest and shall include supporting documentation or references. Protests must be based on illegal discrimination, abuse of discretion, or procedure/process error. Protests should NOT be based on receiving unexpected results. We cannot be responsible for lost mail, misdirected mail, or failure of mail to be delivered after it has been entrusted to the U.S. Postal Service.

ESTABLISHMENT OF ELIGIBILITY

Candidates who are successful in all screening and testing stages will be placed on an eligibility list. Typically, an eligibility list for a classification expires after one (1) year. Candidates on the expired eligibility list are no longer considered for positions within the class. Eligibility lists may be extended beyond one year or expire sooner than one year. Eligibility lists may be merged, in which case candidate ranks may change.

SELECTION PROCESS

Candidates on the eligibility list will be called in rank order to participate in final selection interviews with the hiring manager until three ranks of candidates have accepted the invitation to interview. Ranks may include ties so more than three candidates may be called to interview for one vacancy. Please note that candidates will be removed from the eligibility list for declining the invitation to interview more than three (3) times.

OFFERS OF EMPLOYMENT

Official offers of employment are ONLY made by the Bassett Unified School District Personnel Commission office. Offers are subject to satisfactory completion of ALL the pre-employment processing including: successful completion of a drug test, tuberculosis examination, fingerprint clearance by the California Department of Justice, and proof of eligibility to work in the United States.

ADVANCED STEP PLACEMENT

All new regular classified employees shall be paid in accordance with the salary range established for the class to which assigned. Initial placement will normally be the first step of the salary range. However, a new employee may receive advanced step placement with an approval from the Personnel Commission. Requests for advanced step must be submitted in writing to the Personnel Commission office before the employee's first day of work. 

Approval will be based on the following criteria:

a. Additional qualifying experience beyond that required for entry into the class.

b. Additional education at the college level when related to the position, beyond the established educational requirements for entry into the class.

c. Evidence of currently receiving a salary greater than the first step of the salary for the classification.
