Where the chemistry happens…

We are seeking an Advanced Process Control and Optimization engineer to join our Port Arthur, TX site which operates a world scale steam cracker and C4 complex. The site also operates a pyrolysis gasoline unit, an indirect alkylation unit, an olefins conversion unit as well as a significant utility support system.

The site was built as one of the world's largest naphtha steam crackers with a joint venture partnership that includes BASF Corporation and TOTALEnergies.

This position provides strategic controls and optimization support for the Port Arthur olefins site. The position identifies, leads and implements control strategies to improve plant operability, reliability and efficiency. Additionally, the position is responsible for maintaining and updating, as needed, APC applications, and support systems.

As a Controls and Optimization Engineer (Hybrid), Port Arthur, TX, You Create Chemistry By...

  • Being responsible for environmental and safety compliance support through process control-related engineering and troubleshooting.
  • Being responsible for maintaining site APC applications and updating as needed as well as troubleshooting ssues with RTO/APC/DCS relationships if needed.
  • Providing direction for strategic control initiatives such as Alarm Management and High-Performance Graphics.
  • Identifying, leading, and implementing control strategies that improve plant operability, profitability, and efficiency.
  • Serving as primary site advanced process controls expert.
  • Participating in an on-call role for the site process control support team. Supporting capital project engineering efforts as needed.
  • Leading development on APC or RTO additions/changes while ensuring compliance with the technical specifications.
  • Mentoring junior-level control engineers in the control group as needed.
  • Leading the department on a rotating basis with other group engineers during absence of the process control manager.
  • Participating in knowledge exchange with other BASF sites for best practices in strategic control areas including, but not limited to, Alarm Management, High Performance Graphics, Real Time Optimization.

If you...

  • Hold a bachelor's or advanced degrees in Chemical, Electrical or Computer / Instrument Engineering and at least 10 years of relevant experience in the chemical or refining industries.
  • Are experienced in the engineering, operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of Advanced Process Control applications such as Aspen DMCPlus.
  • Have the ability to read and update electrical and instrument documents such as schematics, specifications, P&IDs and one-line diagrams.
  • Have good working knowledge of chemical plant equipment and technologies.
  • Have good oral and written communication skills.
  • Are experienced in working with the Foxboro DCS (desired).
