Barrie School seeks candidates for the position of Middle & Upper School Spanish Teacher with employment beginning August 2023.

About Barrie School

Established in 1932, Barrie School cultivates intrinsic motivation in students through a progressive and collaborative approach to education. The school currently serves nearly 400 students in two divisions: Barrie Lower School (12-months to 5th grade) and Barrie Middle & Upper School (6th to 12th grade). The school is also the home to the Institute for Advanced Montessori Studies, a nationally recognized training institute for teachers throughout the region, and Barrie Camp, a day program that serves more than 500 families each summer.
Barrie is located in Silver Spring, Maryland outside Washington, D.C. and within one mile of the Metro subway. Our verdant 45-acre campus of open fields, streams, ponds, forests, and stables provides space for learning, play, and exploration. Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred
  • Two years teaching experience in independent or public schools preferred
  • Ability to teach French a plus
  • Experience using Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling (TPRS) as a methodology for immersing students in the target language
  • Understanding of and familiarity with American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) standards and administration of ACTFL Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL) strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting an intentionally diverse and inclusive community and demonstrating cross-cultural competency
  • Excellent communication skills, detail-oriented, and ability to connect with diverse and wide-ranging constituencies, including but not limited to, students, parents, and faculty
  • A sense of humor and commitment to building rapport with colleagues

Responsibilities

  • Flexible to teach any level from Spanish 1A (6th grade) to Spanish Topics (11th grade), but primarily responsible for 3, and 4, an advanced topics class, or any combination
  • Willing and eager to advise a group of approximately six to 10 students
  • Collaborate with academic leaders and the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion team to foster inclusivity and belonging in the classroom and community at large
  • Run or co-chaperone an immersive Extended Study Week (ESW) program each year
  • Attendance at weekly world language department meetings
  • Other duties as assigned, based on needs of the organization
