Bard College is Hiring a Housing Coordinator Near New York, NY

The Housing Coordinator will assist Bard Prison Initiative (BPI) alumni with housing needs to ensure that each individual can function well in other areas of their life, as they pursue their careers, continue their education, and adjust to life in the community.

Job Duties:
Housing Coordination

  • Ensure alums who are returning home, who do not have stable housing, are successfully placed in transitional housing before their release dates
  • This may include meeting alums returning home on their release dates at facilities, bus stations, etc.
  • Communicate with the Reentry team to coordinate available housing with our partner organizations for students or alum soon to be released. This includes:
  • Drafting Letters to alums inside about their housing concerns
  • Coordinate alums for visits to apartments or Single Room Occupancy (SRO) units. This includes:
  • Visiting units in advance of each alumni visit
  • Taking video if an alum is not present
  • Draft Letters of reasonable assurance for alums in immediate need of housing (pre and/or post release), ensuring them beds at one of our housing partner locations
  • Plan lessons and prepare course materials for the housing portion of the Transition Workshop. This includes:
  • Teaching two-hourly segments of the transitional workshop
  • Making yourself available to speak with alums during office hours Monday-Friday
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and support the mission, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards, and the code of ethical behavior
  • Liaise with other departments within the organization to provide a team approach to the management of our organization. This includes:
  • Establishing and maintaining collaborative working relationships between departments, with coworkers and particularly with other members of a project team
  • Prepare for team meetings, in advance, and act as facilitator or notetaker for the meeting as needed
  • Perform other job-related duties and responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time

Alumni & Client Relations/Services

  • Advise alums about ongoing housing needs and making them feel comfortable and supported around their needs
  • Show units to alums on behalf of housing partners
  • Take calls from alums, as needed, who have questions about housing and addressing emergency housing issues

Outreach

  • Attend and participate in housing outreach and think tanks, if they are relevant to our work

Partner Relationships / Networking

  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with our housing partners, including both providers in transitional and permanent housing
  • Establish partnerships with new organizations and potential housing partners
  • Continuous or ongoing networking with additional housing providers

Administration

  • Attend all-staff meetings, weekly meetings with BPI NYC Team, and other meetings as assigned
  • Attend and lead all relevant meetings as they pertain to the overall organizational purpose of the function on an as needed basis
  • Research resources, particularly permanent housing options
  • Collect and record housing data
  • Generate and submit all relevant reports to appropriate parties as needed
  • Monitor and maintain all necessary and relevant policies and procedures on an as needed and ongoing basis
  • Ensure ongoing effective interdepartmental communications at all times
  • Stay within all organizational and departmental policies and procedures at all times

Qualifications:

Required

  • Associates Degree
  • Proficient in Google Suite. Additional proficiency with Microsoft Suite a plus
  • Desire and/or strong skill in working with and assisting people
  • Frequent travel is expected within NYCS

Preferred

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher
  • General knowledge of the NYC housing market
  • General knowledge of, or experience with, transitional housing in NYC
  • Comfortable working independently and in a fast-paced environment juggling multiple deadlines, multiple projects, and competing priorities
  • Comfortable facilitating or leading or teaching a room of seminar style class/attendees regarding housing
  • Precise editing skills and attention to detail
  • Exceptional writing and communication skills, with ability to represent BPI’s mission to supporters and deep understanding of BPI’s core values
  • Ability to understand and use data in assessing and communicating program outcomes

Compensation: $60,000-$65,000; full-time, exempt
This salary range reflects the College's good faith and reasonable estimate of the compensation for the position at the time of the job posting. Salary decisions are dependent on several factors including but not limited to market and organizational considerations, experience, and qualifications of a selected candidate as well as internal and external equity.
