POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the preschool director and in accordance with The Texas Department of
Family and Protective Services, goals and standards established by the Barbara Bauer Briggs
Family YMCA, the Preschool Teacher is responsible for implementing the curriculum and provide a nurturing, well-supervised and safe environment for preschool children. This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Develop and promote activities created to enhance mental, physical and social development like storytelling, arts and crafts, playing games, music and field trips.
  • Instruct and supervise in the classroom, on the playground, in the gymnasium, in the locker rooms, in the pool, on field trips (or any other location on and off-site where the children may be).
  • Implement with the creation and implementation of lesson plans, craft activities, etc.
  • Provide a safe environment for all activities on and off site.
  • Must have the ability to multi-task.
  • Get acquainted with parents and guardians to organize discussions on the progress and needs of kids in order to ascertain priorities of the kids and suggest methods of promoting learning and development.
  • The Preschool Teacher must be alert, friendly and responsive to children, parents and co-workers.
  • Punctuality and dependability is a must.
  • Teacher must enforce safety rules and report/treat/document any issues or injuries.
  • Attendance of staff meetings and training is required.
  • Completion of housekeeping duties that are assigned.
  • Carry out other duties assigned.
  • Change diapers and potty train children.
  • Keep up with weekly and montly paperwork for licensing standards.
  • Keep a clean and organized classroom.
  • Train children in the appropriate feeding habits and personal hygiene.
  • Create and impose standards of behavior and principles for maintaining order.

QUALIFICATIONS :

1. At least 18 years of age.

2. High school diploma or equivalent.

3. Must be able to pass an FBI fingerprint and background check.

4. Becoming CPR and first aid certified is a requirement for all staff.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

1. Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.

2. Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.

3. Must be able to lift and/or assist children up to 50 pounds in weight.

4. Must be able to lift and carry food and supplies weighing up to 20 pounds.

5. Ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time.

6. Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.

7. Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.

8. Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency.

Preschool Teacher:

  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
  • Ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small to average size child.
  • ELC teachers and ELC staff are required to wear an approved YMCA shirt each shift they are clocked in for. ELC Teachers and ELC staff must wear black, khaki or scrub like bottoms when they are clocked in. No jeans or open toed shoes are allowed. A YMCA name tag is also required for each shift staff are clocked in for. Any ELC teacher or ELC staff who do not follow the dress code will be written up and could also receive a possible job termination.

Pay: $15.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
