Physician Assistant Role Scope:

Hartford HealthCare Backus Hospital is seeking a Physician Assistant to join their Surgical Subspecialty Inpatient Team. This team will have a primary focus on Urology but will also include Urogyn, OB/Gyn, Breast, and Plastic Surgery. The successful candidate will be responsible for various functions including first assisting in the operating room, rounding, bedside procedures and consults. APPs will work in collaboration with a team of seven urologists and a lead urologic physician assistant.

  • Perform daily patient rounds and implement therapeutic intervention
  • Exercise judgment on problems requiring consultation, referral or evaluation
  • Perform admissions, consults and discharge of patients
  • Ordering diagnostic studies as part of clinical treatment plan
  • First assist surgeon in the OR with professional competency
  • Perform and assist with bedside procedures
  • Identify and provide teaching for patients, families, and other health care providers

Shift: FULL TIME (40 HOURS) Coverage for Monday-Friday from 7-5pm. Shifts may include 5hr or 10hr work days. Weekend coverage will be required in the future. Flexibility required.

Qualifications

Advanced Practitioner Requirements

  • Graduation from an ARC-PA accredited Physician Assistant Program
  • Licensed, or eligible to be licensed, as a Physician Assistant in the state of Connecticut
  • Certification or eligible to be certified as a Physician Assistant.
  • 1 years of working as a Physician Assistant, with urologic experience and OR ROBOTIC experience preferred. This should not dissuade new graduates to apply!
  • Considerable knowledge of anatomy and physiology; knowledge of the surgical procedures; knowledge AORN recommended practices and procedures. Knowledgeable in practices involved in patient care as it relates to different disciplines and disease states.
  • Knowledge of medications and their reactions and interactions; Counseling skills; considerable interpersonal skills; ability to work independently; ability to work under pressure.
  • AGACNP Board Certification as an acute care nurse practitioner and / or critical care AP experience. RNFA (RN First Assist) Certification required.
