Job Description:

We are currently seeking resumes from highly motivated and well-qualified environmental professionals to join our team in our Irvine, California office. Candidates should be energetic, self-motivated, and interested in working with a diverse group of professionals in a team atmosphere. The intent of this role is to grow and manage environmental services within the Highway, Transit, and Rail Markets (Transportation) throughout California. Pursuits may arise outside of California but will be coordinated on a case-by-case basis. This position is based in Irvine, CA (home office) although travel is expected.

In addition to leadership, management of projects, and mentoring staff, this position includes the necessary business development to develop new leads and project opportunities and establish a consistent clientele base. The ideal candidate should be willing to assist our marketing team when preparing proposals, and able to participate in project interviews when needed. Superior writing and oral communication skills are a necessity.

This position is KEY to building and promoting our environmental capabilities in California. The candidate will be involved in strategic discussions on all aspects of highway, transit, and rail pursuits as well as staffing needs as workload demands. The candidate will have the full support as needed from both AZTEC’s Environmental Practice Lead as well as the West Coast Region Environmental Manager and other management. 

Primary job duties:

  • Assume responsibility for our current CA environmental services within the Transportation (highway, transit, and rail) markets.
  • Prepare vision and work plan for long-term contract targets and win strategies including any key hires or positions to accomplish these goals. 
  • Build and manage interdisciplinary teams on large projects from either in-house staff or sub-consultants.
  • Interface with other AZTEC leadership across all Practices and Divisions to establish lines of communication.
  • Work with AZTEC’s West Region Environmental Services Manager, Environmental Practice Lead, Rail and Transit Practice Lead, and Transportation Practice Lead to establish yearly goals for highways and rail environmental services.
  • Prepare, review, and/or oversee project-level budgets, scopes of work, and schedules.

We understand because the position will require a “doer-seller” initially until the full required staff are in place, project-level duties would include:

  • Manage and/or prepare CEQA/NEPA documents or other technical resource documents or permits as expertise and experience allow.
  • Be that expert; assist clients in navigating the various regulatory or permitting requirements on projects. 
  • Review engineering design plans for compliance with environmental and/or permit requirements.
  • Manage environmental compliance on projects using resources both in-house and as necessary, sub consultants on large alternative delivery projects.
  • Serve in the role of Environmental Compliance manager or oversee staff in these roles on projects.
  • Collect, analyze, and summarize project data. Prepare findings and make recommendations based on analytical data, including maps, graphics, charts, tables, presentations, and written reports.

Education, Experience, and Other Requirements:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences, natural resources, planning, or related fields, advanced degree a plus.
  • Minimum of twenty (20) years of experience preparing CEQA/NEPA documents for transportation projects in California.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the capacity to effectively communicate thoughts and ideas to peers, senior staff, and clients. 
  • Office and work-from-home environment
  • Travel is required when necessary, including the potential for overnight stays.
  • Experience with common software for industry

Working Conditions and Environment:

This position will require general supervision and will have to use independent judgment within established guidelines. Generally, uses advanced knowledge to analyze, interpret, or make deductions from varying facts or circumstances. Will need the ability to establish rapport quickly with others working on the same project, and be able to promote a positive team environment. Working knowledge of dealing with a diverse population while using tact, diplomacy, and respect.
