Axle is seeking a Scientific Editor to join our vibrant team at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) supporting the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) located in Baltimore, MD.

Overall Position Summary and Objectives

The purpose of this position is to review materials for writing assignments and edit and finalize scientific papers for submission to peer-reviewed journals.

Deliverables:

  • Develop and document a database search strategy and translate it to be rerun in other databases. - Ad-Hoc
  • Conduct bibliographic, gray literature, and hand searches for primary and secondary sources and systematic reviews. - Ad-Hoc
  • Edit scientific papers according to manuscript guidelines, including writing the methods section, to finalize them for submission to peer-reviewed journals. - Ad-Hoc
  • Utilize bibliographic management software. - Ad-Hoc
  • Participate in meetings, both virtual and, when possible, in person, to assist in generating meeting or workshop summaries and meeting-related manuscripts. - Ad-Hoc

Work Details:

  • Attend the coordinating committee and working group meetings, as well as weekly meetings of the leadership team. 5
  • Develops communication strategies and plans that align with overall program objectives and goals.
  • Research and write plans for sharing information with the scientific community and the general public.
  • Attend routine staff meetings to gather the information necessary to develop effective communication projects, plans, and strategies.
  • Prepares written and electronic information documents for various audiences.
  • Research and write scientific and technical educational materials for a variety of print and electronic media platforms.
  • Research and write public health information and education materials for a variety of print and electronic platforms.
  • Conducts media and content analysis.
  • Monitor scientific and technical literature, conduct content analysis, and report findings.
  • Maintains social media and Internet sites, and updates content and materials.
  • Monitors press coverage through press calls, news alerts, and other sources.
  • Track frequently asked questions at speaking engagements and other events and develop materials to address relevant questions.
  • Builds relationships with the press and maintains specialized contacts.
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships and engage in two-way dialogue with key stakeholders.
  • Attends workshops, seminars, and meetings to stay abreast of current scientific and policy trends.

  • Identifies new meetings and conferences to promote initiatives within the Program.
  • Serve as an expert resource to staff and consortium members about opportunities and challenges for engagement with the program.
  • Provides communication and media subject matter expertise and coordinates media engagements.
  • Attend scientific meetings and seminars to identify new research developments and activities, including the publication/announcement of research results, the launch of clinical trials or initiatives involving new technologies, and others.
