    I. General Description:
    To attain the optimal health and learning environment for all students and staff and to administer and coordinate the school health program.
    II. Qualifications:
    • Baccalaureate Degree from accredited university School of Nursing with state accreditation or nurse Practitioner Degree Valid License as a Registered Nurse in Arizona.
    • School Nurse Certification, State of Arizona
    • Two years recent experience working with children and families.
    • Department of Arizona Health Services Audiology Certificate
    III. Duties and Responsibilities:
    1. Uses skills and training to provide immediate care for accidents, counsels parents or school personnel to plan course of action.
    2. Attends to student illness at school.
    3. Administers prescribed medication to students with doctor signed permission forms from the parents in original numbered prescription container.
    4. Screens and evaluates students for deficits in vision, hearing, scoliosis, growth, and blood pressure, when appropriate, and will refer to parents and/or appropriate agency when necessary.
    5. Follows process to identify students at risk for physical and psychological problems and communicates health needs to other school personnel.
    6. Solicits from teachers health information, or notes from parents that would have a bearing on the students well being.

    7. Uses visits to the Nurse’s office as a teaching opportunity.
    8. Helps adolescents gain insight into such problems as school-age pregnancy, sexually transmittable diseases, substance abuse, suicide and eating disorders, enabling them to assume responsibility for their decisions.
    9. Maintains a current health record, including a health and developmental history, an immunization history and an emergency form on each student.
    10. Monitors school immunization policy.
    11. Completes district, county, state reports in a timely manner.
    12. Prepares insurance forms for insured students and Workman’s Compensation papers for school personnel.
    13. Provides necessary health counseling and refers case to an appropriate professional when needed.
    14. Uses community resources to referral of students with unmet health needs in the school. Refers students with unmet health needs to available community resources.
    15. Collaborates with health agencies to insure continuity of service and care.
    16. Seeks expert consultation, supervision and peer review as needed.
    17. Serves as liaison among the parent, school and community in health matters.
    18. Promotes preventative well-care strategies with school personnel and arranges in-service programs regarding current health issues.
    19. Confers with the Principal about student absences.
    20. Communicates with the parent; makes home visit when necessary.
    21. Collaborates with school administrators and counselors in assessing and improving the social and emotional climate of school and classrooms.
    22. Communicates to students and/or parent regarding preventable potential health problems.
    23. Participates as a member of the assessment and placement committee for special education programs whenever required.
    24. Engages in research and evaluation of school health services and acts as a change agent for school health programs and school nursing practice.
    25. Manages student behavior in a positive, constructive manner.
    26. Demonstrates sensitivity to the needs and feelings of students.
    27. Works to increase student concept of self-worth.
    28. Uses a variety of behavior management techniques effectively.
    29. Monitors student behavior on the campus.
    30. Provides appropriate feedback to students about their behavior.
