Ave Maria University is Hiring an Associate Athletic Groundskeeper Near Ave Maria, FL

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The associate athletic groundskeeper will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of Bermuda ball field health. This will include but not be limited to irrigation wet checks, irrigation repairs and associated documentation of fixes, quarterly flushing of lines, etc. All work will be performed with minimal disturbance to athletic teams, which will require weekly meetings with team coaches. The associate athletic grounds keeper will oversee student worker teams to ensure the proper functioning of irrigation systems and promote efficient water usage in compliance with local regulations for new installation build outs. This role requires a strong understanding of common weeds found within South Florida and grass field maintenance for growing zones 9b and 10a. The position will be responsible for identifying and scheduling appropriate controls for pests, especially fire ants.

A secondary component of this role will be assisting the Director of Landscape with the design, installation, maintenance, and repair of landscaping beds and tree copses and associated irrigation systems around all AMU athletic fields.

It is the responsibility of the AMU Grounds Team to invite students, faculty, staff, and campus visitors to draw closer to Christ through the proper stewardship of his created world. We specifically do this through the beautification of Our Lady’s grounds. It is our hope that all who tread our campus are filled with wonder and peace.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


Train and oversee student workers in techniques such as planting (install), harvesting (including propagation), weeding, trimming and irrigation repairs.


Drive heavy equipment for offloading of materials and installation of vegetation (trees, palms, etc.).


Confer with department director to evaluate weather and soil conditions; develop and implement SOP’s for fertilizer, herbicide and cultivating techniques; and inspect grounds state (vegetative health, irrigation systems, etc.)


Monitor workers to detect inefficient or unsafe work procedures and initiate corrective action as necessary.


EDUCATION:
bachelor’s degree


EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of 1-3 years’ experience. Irrigation repair and heavy equipment experience preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Exceptional time management and organization skills.

Strong oral and written communication skills. Knowledge of vegetation within growing zones 8-11.

Ability to work independently, collaboratively, and under supervision. Capable of using logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions.

Must possess strong initiative, leadership skills, organizational and project management skills, with the ability to multitask to manage a variety of projects and priorities, coordinating the actions of others, follow through on projects to timely completion, and demonstrate excellent judgment with attention to detail.

Microsoft Office experience with Word, Outlook, Publisher, Excel, Power Point software experience.

PHYSICAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Requires ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; the ability to stand, walk and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to heavy weights of 10 - 100 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, type and perform data entry, visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment and read technical information, ability to hear in order to answer telephones and to communicate verbally, and the ability to sit for extended periods of time.


WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is performed outdoors with minimal time spent inside. Exposure to inclement weather and wildlife is to be expected.
