The Role

The Vice President of Financial Reporting is responsible for the Company’s external investor and SEC reporting process, consolidated internal reporting, as well as oversight for transaction and deal structure analysis and technical and regulatory accounting and disclosure matters. These responsibilities include providing leadership and guidance to accounting staff. The individual in this role will work closely with a range of accounting, finance, investment, development, operational, IT, and legal associates.

This role will:

  • Oversee the external financial reporting for the Company.
  • Serve as the GAAP accounting lead for technical accounting review and structuring assessments for transactions and other business activities, as well as for assessing new accounting standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee the accounting and reporting for the Company’s derivative and hedge accounting as well as for equity and share based compensation.
  • Support of corporate and department initiatives as needed, developing and generating monthly and ad hoc reporting as well as system upgrades and implementations.
  • Support the external audit process for both financial reporting and SOX.
  • Oversee Financial Reporting and Technical Accounting teams, ensuring proper guidance and training/cross training to foster staff development and achievement of the primary job functions and goals of the team.

The Financial Reporting will include:

  • Oversight of the SEC reporting for the Company, including Forms 10-Q and 10-K, as well as the quarterly Earnings Release
  • Oversight of, or support for annual reporting for the Company’s Employee Stock Purchase Plan, 401k Plan, Proxy Statement, and other legal and regulatory reporting.
  • Periodic benchmarking of reporting practices of the Company

Technical Reporting will include:

  • Providing GAAP accounting and reporting guidance for financial, development, and other real estate transactions and other corporate activity
  • Monitoring updates for GAAP and regulatory requirements and serve as lead to assess impact to AvalonBay and implement updates.
  • Developing and maintaining all necessary accounting policies
  • Ensuring initial and ongoing documentation to support hedge accounting, and related accounting, reporting and disclosure for derivatives and hedge accounting.
  • Overseeing the accounting and reporting for all equity related transactions and share based compensation, including the initial recognition, any modifications and ongoing accounting and reporting.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting required; Master’s degree preferred

Experience:

  • 10 years of accounting experience, SEC reporting and experience with the corporate close and consolidation process
  • 7 years of supervisory experience overseeing multiple direct reports in an accounting function
  • Experience should include public accounting, real estate experience in public or corporate preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Creates and delivers group presentations on function-related subject matter and writes reports in a clear, concise form.
  • Performs general arithmetic to analyze complex financial and business operations figures.
  • Performs basic Microsoft Office applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations.
  • Frequently operates general office equipment such as, but not limited to, personal computer, telephone, photocopying machine, facsimile machine, and postage machine.
  • Displays excellent time management, organizational, and analytical skills as demonstrated by prior work experience

Licenses/Certifications:

  • CPA designation
