Veterinarian

About Us:

Would you like to be a part of making history? Austin Pets Alive (APA!) is a leading animal rescue and welfare organization. Reimagining animal services from our headquarters in Austin, Texas, we help communities throughout the nation! As a grassroots, revolutionary nonprofit organization, APA! creates and sustains innovative programs that save the lives of tens of thousands of pets each year, while providing support to the humans who love them. We have also received public recognition for our professional expertise in areas such as philanthropy, marketing, shelter operations and more!

Not only have we celebrated 100,000 lives saved in 2022, we have built a sustainable model in Austin that has led the way for our city becoming the largest No Kill city in the country. After more than a decade of success, we are teaching other shelters and organizations how to follow our life saving formula.

APA!, and its sub-brands American Pets Alive! (AmPA!), Texas Pets Alive! (TPA!) and Human Animal Support Services (HASS), have grown tremendously over the years, and have influenced animal welfare legislation, established animal sheltering best practices and reimagined human animal support services across the nation.

About The Position:

Have you ever been in a position where you felt like you could have saved an animal but there were limitations that kept you from doing so? Or there was a chance a patient may have lived, but due to uncertainty of prognosis you were required to euthanize them? Our veterinarians make life saving decisions every day without the limitations of traditional private practice. This means more effort goes into trying to save an animal, more experience is gained in doing so, and our vets get to see cases that normally would never be given a chance to live, live!

Duties Include:

  • Outpatient/Inpatient exams, case workup and making treatment plans (most revolving around already established protocols)
  • Management of outbreaks and prevention of outbreaks (with militant vaccine implementation and isolation of sick animals, tracking etc).
  • Keeping accurate medical records as cases are seen
  • Telemedicine and quick/efficient email/phone communications with caretakers
  • Performance of basic surgeries, high volume high quality spay/neuter and emergency surgeries.
  • Workup of challenging cases with consultation with our other vets in house, as well as specialists as warranted.
  • After hours treatment/triage when on call

SCHEDULE:

  • Combination of week and weekend days for a total of 40-50 hours a week
  • Shifts are comprised of 4 10 hour shifts per week.
  • Primary emergency call rotation with other veterinarians.

Why Should You Apply?

  • Our vets have the ability to learn and perform an array of surgical procedures not typically seen in private practice.
  • Cases that come through the APA! Clinic are unique, unlike other medical clinics or shelters.
  • This is an opportunity to work for the most innovative, progressive and inclusive animal welfare organization in the nation
  • Work in an environment that will allow you to see and treat challenging cases, while also tracking their progress and outcome to enhance your veterinary knowledge.
  • Compensation: 100k-129k
  • Up to 95% employer-paid medical coverage
  • 401(k) retirement plan (with 2% company match)
  • Life, dental, vision, and short-term disability insurance
  • 10 paid holidays
  • 10 days of PTO (15 days after 1 year!)
  • Employee Assistance Plan that includes free counseling and mental health resources
  • Professional development opportunities
  • Fully subsidized virtual veterinary medicine and emergency fund for your pets
  • 20% Employee Discount on all APA store items
  • Most of our benefits, including medical, are available on Day 1!
  • Continuing Education: APA! pays up to $1,000 for one, approved continuing education course (including course registration, airfare, hotel costs, and meal stipend) and up to two days of leave while attending the approved course.
  • PLIT (Professional Liability Insurance Trust) Insurance
  • State (Texas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners) License
  • VIN (Veterinary Information Network) Membership
  • ASV (Associate of Shelter Veterinarians) Membership

What We’re Looking For:

  • Highly motivated veterinarian with a DVM degree and license to practice in Texas, who strives to do whatever is needed to promote lifesaving
  • Previous shelter experience is preferred but not required.
  • Passionate about helping people, as well as pets.
  • Surgical skills and surgical confidence are preferred and will gain a higher salary, but are not required.
  • Diverse backgrounds, identities and perspectives!
