Direct Support professionals will provide services, such as assisting with daily living and home services, to individuals (in the individual's home) who need assistance as a result of a disability and/or chronic illness. Services may include but are not limited to, light housecleaning, laundry, meal preparation, transportation, companionship, bathing, shaving, positioning, dressing, and respite. DSPs are responsible for ensuring that service is delivered in a caring, professional, and respectful manner, by relevant agency policies and DODD (Department of Developmental Disabilities) standards.
Applicants must be able to pass a background check.
Applicant must be able to pass checks in: 
  • List of Excluded Individuals and Entities, from the U.S. Office of Inspector General.
  • Ohio Sex Offender and Child Victim Database, from the Ohio Attorney General's Office.
  • DODD Abuser Registry Verification, from the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities.
  • Ohio Nurse Aide Registry, from the Ohio Department of Health.
  • ODRC Inmates Database, from the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction.
  • Ohio Department of Medicaid Exclusion & Suspension List.
  • The United States general services administration system for award management database is the seventh required registry check.
Other Qualifications:
  • Ability to obtain and maintain First Aid, CPR - adult, child, and infant; delegated nursing. (training will be provided, if not already certified)
  • Valid Ohio Driver’s License with Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
  • No more than five points on the driving record.
  • Proof of auto insurance.
Certifications and experience are a plus, but not required, as in-house training is provided.
Before providing services to a person with disabilities, provider agency staff must complete eight hours of training that includes the following topics:
  • An overview of serving people with developmental disabilities, including implementation of individual service plans;
  • The role and responsibilities of direct services staff about services, including person-centered planning, community integration, self-determination, and self-advocacy;
  • Universal precautions for infection control, including hand-washing and the disposal of bodily waste;
  • The rights of people with disabilities are outlined in sections 5123.62 to 5123.64 of the Ohio Revised Code;
  • And the requirements of OAC 5123-17-02, better known as the MUI Rule, include health and welfare alerts issued by the department.
No experience is needed.
