Assistant Attorney General – Division of Consumer Affairs

Job Summary:

The Tennessee Attorney General’s Office is seeking applications for the position of Assistant Attorney General. This position would work with the Division of Consumer Affairs (DCA) in handling consumer complaints, statewide consumer education efforts, and overseeing the Office’s participation in internship, externship, and clinical programs. This is a non-litigation position.

Qualifications:

The desired candidate will have three or more years of experience as an attorney. The candidate should be comfortable working with a team and with the general public. The candidate should have strong research skills that allow him or her to appropriately advise DCA on difficult consumer complaints. A candidate with experience managing employees is a plus.

Duties include:

· Provide counsel to DCA on legal issues including, but not limited to, those related to the Tennessee Consumer Protection Act.

· In conjunction with the Consumer Protection Deputy and DCA Director:

o Advise regarding the identification of potential violations of the law and the initiation of enforcement proceedings through the Consumer Protection Division where necessary for the protection of the public.

o Advise regarding the appropriate handling of and/or response to escalated or sensitive consumer complaints or inquiries.

o Attend meetings/hearings and provide other counsel as necessary to the DCA Director in preparation for such events.

o Help evaluate and reformulate DCA policies, practices, and plans to improve outcomes and better promote DCA’s mission.

· Participate in consumer education events throughout the state, including presentations on consumer protection.

· Create consumer protection education materials such as brochures and consumer guides.

· Serve as point of contact for outside groups with stake in consumer protection issues (e.g., Legal Aid, Ft. Campbell).

· Supervise students serving as clerks in the Consumer Protection Division.

· Provide support on the Office’s needs for the services of settlement and restitution administrators; including familiarity with typical administrator practices as well as issues specific to the Office’s areas of practice, and insights about specific firms providing such services.

· The majority of the candidate’s time will be spent on the responsibilities outlined above; but when those responsibilities allow, the candidate might sometimes participate directly in some of the Consumer Protection Division’s investigation and/or litigation activity.
