Responsible for implementing and overseeing the Occupational Safety Officer, Part of Atlantic Medical Group (AMG). Reports to Manager, Environmental, Health & Safety, Executive Director, Health, and Safety. AMG Clinical practice and hospital sites

The role of the Safety Officer is to support an effective Occupational Health and Safety Program aimed at protecting the health and safety of AHS team members which minimizes the health and safety risks; and costs associated with safety and environmental regulatory risks to the organization.

Principal Accountabilities:

The Occupational Safety Officer is responsible for the administration of all AHS/AMG safety programs. This position works with practice and department managers and coordinators to ensure all safety efforts are following State and Federal Law. The Safety Officer is responsible for the implementation of AHS safety compliance program and serves as a resource to AMG practices.

Assumes full responsibility for the administration of the AHS Safety Program in developing and evaluating safety goals, and standards; assists and advises management in promoting overall safety awareness and an effective participation in an occupational injury prevention program by all organizations; provides site specific direction and leadership on safety issues.

Plans, directs, and conducts Environmental Tour efforts at assigned site(s) consistent with any regulatory body requirements - Inspects offices, work sites, buildings, grounds, equipment, and tools for compliance with safety standards, ordinances, laws, and practices. Recommends necessary corrective actions; gives instruction and advice to supervisors and team members on accident prevention and the elimination of unsafe working conditions. Conducts follow-up inspections to ensure compliance.

Identifies ergonomic issues and works with Ergonomic personnel to implement appropriate solutions to ergonomic problems. Performs workstation evaluation upon request.

Investigates and analyses accidents, determines their causes, and the means of preventing their recurrence; discusses such problems and their solution with department supervisors and team members. Records event in the AHS event reporting system.

Assists in the planning of safety education programs; assists in the preparation of or develops preventive injury and accident instructional training materials; provides on-site or classroom type training and instruction on a wide range of safety-related matters such as spill response, equipment operation, and other subjects. Collaborates with AMG Infection Prevention and Clinical Education.

Organizes and is responsible for input and maintenance of the AHS Safety Manual; EOC- Environment of Care Manuals/documents including relevant forms, processes, and procedures.

Prepares various required reports for distribution.

Serves as the primary AMG liaison for Occupational Health and Safety issues; collaborates with other departments including Infection Prevention, Risk Management, Security, Engineering, clinical units and others as needed.

Prepares reports for appropriate levels of management; collects and analyses statistics on waste generated and prepares and distributes reports on trend information and cost identifications; prepares articles for department publications through the intranet.

Serves as a resource on all AMG Safety related issues and provides information and feedback to AMG practices. Fit-Testing of Employees:

Manages the fit-testing of employees assigned to wear respirators

Maintains appropriate documentation of those fit-tests

Administers the respirator program at assigned site(s)

Maintains basic safety training, and accident records

Organizes and coordinates appropriate recognition programs for identifying outstanding safety performance by departments, units, or individuals.

Maintains current knowledge with applicable laws and regulations involving the health and safety function at assigned site(s), including but not limited to regulations and requirements of:

NJDOH- New Jersey Department of Health

OSHA Occupational Health and Safety Administration

Workers right-to-know

Hazardous Materials and Transportation act

Resource Conservation and Recovery act

EPAs Clean Air and Water acts

EPAs Hazardous & Solid Waste Amendments

The Joint Commission Standards.

The Occupational Safety Officer is a primary point of contact for: OSHA, NJDEP and EPA personnel during practice visits/inspections.Responsible for implementing formal monitoring mechanisms including but not limited to:

Conducts Environmental Compliance audits for applicable Federal/State/Local Laws.

Environmental Monitoring

Monitors responsible departments compliance with chemical/hazardous material use and disposal protocols.

Community Right-to-Know (Annually)

Limits potential liability concerns from safety issues (in collaboration with Risk Management).

Co-Chair of the site- OHSC- Occupational Health & Safety Committee. Participates with and provides support to various committees at assigned site(s) that may include:

Department safety committees

Emergency Preparedness

Infection Prevention

As needed, requested or appropriate

Active participant in the Workplace Violence Prevention Program.

Minimum Education Requirements:

Bachelors degree in biology, chemistry, environmental science, or other related scientific discipline.

Minimum Requirements:

Three years of experience in health and safety program management, safety sciences or engineering. Previous ambulatory experience in health and safety programs in health care preferred. Knowledge of health and safety regulatory requirements.
