Job Purpose

The role of the Subject Leader is to share, understand, and implement the mission and values of the school. The Subject Leader, within their team, is expected to reflect upon current practice, identify strengths and weaknesses, and set goals in order to pursue educational excellence. The Spanish Subject Leader will also work collaboratively within the Group 1 and 2 leadership team.

This role carries a language subject leader stipend of $5,500 with no advisory release.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Committed to a team approach where everyone is expected to play a role in creating the best possible environment for education.
  • Adept in facilitating effective practice to create a team ethos through appropriate management skills and effective communication.
  • Support the further growth and development of the Secondary Spanish programme within a 3K-12 model. 

Curriculum

  • Work with Language Group Leaders to develop and align Spanish curriculum with other languages tracks, school and IBO requirements.
  • Work closely with the curriculum coordinators in the delivery of the curriculum and placement of the students (including provision and evaluation of placement tests).
  • Assist the respective curriculum specialists with the tracking and counseling students in their academic programme.
  • Liaise with the Librarian to resource the library in their respective subject areas.
  • Coordinate the assessment bench-marking across the group with the subject specialists, foster quality work in instruction and pedagogy from other members of the group.
  • Coordinate and ensure quality and consistency of assessments, and the scheduling thereof, across the subject.
  • Awareness of latest developments in curriculum, methodologies and materials in their fields, specifically as they pertain to IB.
  • Overall direction and guidance of other faculty for all Extended Essays in the subject. 
  • Leadership of curriculum review and development. 
  • Ensure that curriculum documentation is kept updated.
  • Maintain a professional library as a resource in the group subject areas.
  • Work closely with other Subject and Group Leaders in promoting interdisciplinary learning.
  • Ensure moderation of assessments.
  • Lead the group in the use of data to inform and improve teaching and learning.
  • Assist in transitions from PYP to MYP and to MYP to DP/CP

People management

  • Assist with staffing decisions and recruitment of suitable teachers.
  • Conduct the professional growth model for members of the group.
  • Ensure that subject faculty meet deadlines.
  • Coordinate and facilitate subject meetings and regularly scheduled PD.
  • Develop and maintain a relationship with the parents, communities and partners for outreaching activities and programs
 

Professional development

  • Attend relevant IB and leadership training on a regular basis.
  • Support teachers in their subject with feedback, support, guidance, and coaching.
  • Share professional information concerning curriculum, pedagogy and professional development.

Budget

  • Operate the subject within the designated budget parameters – preparing the budget request and managing the annual budget.

Communication

  • Engage with all the Subject and Group Leaders of the school through regular meetings as part of the academic leadership of the school.
  • Communicate effectively with the Secondary School Leadership Team including scheduling needs.
  • Represent the subject at appropriate events, and in individual parent meetings as necessary.
  • Ensure that all teachers in the subject provide appropriate communication to parents and students.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Organize and coordinate the Spanish exchange programs, and local cultural field trips

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent 
  • Training and experience in a school setting
