Atlanta Botanical Garden is Hiring an Amphibian Program Assistant Near Atlanta, GA

Description

The Atlanta Botanical Garden maintains a robust collection of amphibians and related animals for education and public enjoyment. The part-time Amphibian Specialist reports to the Greenhouse Manager and works along with the Amphibian Program Coordinator. The primary function of this position is to help maintain a collection of living animals for public display, education, research, conservation and enjoyment. This is a hands-on position requiring: watering; misting; knowledge of captive animal care; knowledge of captive animal habitat care; recognition of nutrition deficiencies; recognition of pest infestation and damage; guest interaction, attention to detail and public amphibian feedings.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Works as part of a team committed to achieving and maintaining excellence in public animal displays relating to the Garden’s plant collections and ecosystem education
  • Excellent communication skills and close communication with the Greenhouse Manager, Amphibian Program Coordinator, working closely with all volunteers, and participation in regular team meetings
  •  Amphibian habitat daily maintenance and ongoing development of the collections and displays. These include but are not limited to cleaning glass, misting, UV treatments, pest management, feeding and sanitation practices
  • Help with monitoring and care of collections within conservatories, quarantine tanks and lab tanks
  • Help maintain food colonies, supplies, as well as clean organized collections and records
  • Participate in public frog feedings
  • Act as an informational resource for other Garden departments as needed.

Requirements

  • Minimum of two years’ experience in Animal Husbandry, preferably in a public institution
  • Experience with set-up and maintenance of integrated living displays
  • Ability to interact and engage with visitors on a daily basis
  • Demonstrated aptitude and enthusiasm for amphibian and animal care and the ability to learn new and unfamiliar animals and techniques
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Fluency in English
  • Computer literacy
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment
  • Ability to work weekends and some holidays

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The ability to do sustained physical work in a humid, hot environment, wash hands frequently, and use of nitrile gloves. Position requires prolonged standing, bending, squatting and the ability to sustain moderate physical exertion with a full-range of body motion. The use of ladders is frequently required. Willingness to get dirty doing a variety of jobs on a daily basis. Must be able to lift 50#.

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS: A successful candidate will possess a high degree of attention to detail, energy and initiative. Must be able to effectively work in a team setting as well as independently and interact with co-workers and volunteers.
