We are looking for a highly skilled and motivated Subcontracts Manager to support both our vegetation management and utility construction projects. The Subcontracts Manager is responsible to lead, plan, negotiate and manage all subcontracting activities related to projects. The position will provide guidance, direction for operations team members that are involved in center-led sourcing activities and is responsible for contractor sourcing, draft review, and negotiating terms and conditions for contractual agreements and performing post award contract administration activities. This individual provides direction and expertise to subcontract related activities for projects within the company.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify potential subcontractors based on project requirements, technical expertise, and capacity to deliver services.
  • Evaluate subcontractors’ capabilities, financial stability, safety records, past performance and compliance with Asplundh’s standards and policies.
  • Lead negotiations with subcontractors on terms, pricing, scope of work, deliverables, and other relevant contractual elements
  • Collaborate with legal and project reams to draft and review subcontract agreements, ensuring alignment with project and company requirements.
  • Identify potential risks associated with subcontractors and develop mitigation strategies to address them effectively.
  • Establish key performance indicators (KPI’s) and monitoring mechanisms to track subcontractors’ performance, enduring adherence to project schedules, quality standards, and safety requirements. Create, maintain, and share reports specific to the project and subcontracts status.
  • Address any issues or disputes that may arise during the execution of subcontracted work, facilitating timely and effective resolution.
  • Manage any changes to subcontract scope, timeline, or budget, ensuring proper documentation and communication to relevant stakeholders.
  • Perform contract management post-award activities through evaluating and status of contractor’s productivity, schedule adherence, contract change management, invoicing, and claims avoidance.
  • Perform closeout of contracts, finalize outstanding contract issues, issue of final modifications, invoices, and coordinate completion of contract performance evaluations.

Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required (MBA preferred). Exceptional knowledge, experience & skill may be considered in lieu of education.
  • 8 years of experience in contract management within Industrial services, construction, or engineering industry.
  • Proven experience in subcontract management and execution of a range of subcontracts as well as a broad range of contract types/structures.
  • Strong understanding of contracting principles, legal regulations, and commercial terms.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple subcontractors and projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to develop business cases, project plans, status, and issue reports.
  • Keeps management apprised of top developments with contractors and in supply industries that affect short-term business performance and long-term business strategy.
  • Leads advanced negotiations with cross-functional teams; develops complex negotiations strategies; demonstrated negotiations capability including adjusting to individual styles and tactics.
  • Strong analytical, verbal, and written communication skills necessary to interact with numerous stakeholders across a variety of businesses and departments.
  • Proven self-starter with a track record of managing multiple complex tasks with the ability to work within a matrix organization and track tasks and deadlines. A sense of ownership over work and responsibilities is strongly preferred.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills and an ability to identify problems, design and articulate solutions, and implement.
  • This position has no direct reports so being able to manage through influence is critical to the success of the role.
  • Travel to up to 40%

As a full-service utility contractor, Asplundh performs tree pruning and removals, right-of-way clearing and maintenance, vegetation management with herbicides, and emergency storm work and logistical support. Asplundh is the parent company of Asplundh Infrastructure Group whose subsidiaries provide overhead and underground line construction, planning and design, meter reading and AMR/AMI installation, electrical testing, and street lighting/traffic signal services. Asplundh also operates Rotor Blade Airborne Utilities Management, overhead electric distribution, and transmission lines using MD 500 helicopters.
