Position Summary:
The purpose of this position is to support the accomplishment of the District mission by providing district-wide leadership and direction for high school to age 21 exceptional student programs and services in compliance with District, State and Federal objectives. Supports the Director of Student Services in designing, developing, implementing, delivering and progress monitoring high school and transition exceptional student services determined appropriate for students. Supports the Director of Student Services and school based administrators in evaluating programs, services, and personnel as assigned in accordance with district policies and procedures. This position also supports the implementation of literacy intervention and universal instruction to increase outcomes for struggling learners.


Principle Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with District administration, District school principals and school special education staff for the purpose of implementing and maintaining services and/or high school transition programs. Assists with setting staffing levels for school special education programs for the purposes of providing services with fiscal efficiency.
  • Support the development and implementation of training of teachers and support personnel in the provision of appropriate special educational and related services including IEP questions and requirements and transitions as outlined in State and Federal law.
  • Consultation with program staff members and principals as needed.
  • Collaboration with outside agencies designed for transition student support.
  • Provide program implementation support and guidance including research, identification and implementation across the district and individual schools in the areas of high school exceptional student services. This may also include facilitation and participation in manifestation meetings, expulsion hearings and other district, school or parent meetings.
  • Work with building principals, leadership teams and/or teachers in order to facilitate the process for adopting, implementing and monitoring a high school to 21 district program plan including assessment, instruction, professional development, and program evaluation.
  • Remain current on instructional strategies and models in program strategies guiding instructional strategies.
  • Assist with the recruitment, hiring, supervision and evaluation of special education staff for the purpose of carrying out objectives within areas of responsibility.
  • Educate and collaborate with District administrators, educators, and providers to assure compliance with state and federal statutes and regulations governing special education services in alignment with general education instructional practices and priorities.
  • Work with teachers to analyze their teaching behaviors to increase student performance in the program.
  • Assist the Director of Student Services to maintain regular communication with special education staff regarding state and federal compliance, program implementation, and review of student/program outcomes.
  • Work collaboratively with District staff, committees, state and local agencies to develop and maintain positive relationships with parent and community stakeholders.
  • Assist the Director of Student Services with management of the collection and compilation of data to complete records and reports required by Local, State and Federal agencies, including the IDEA Federal narrative and budget for CDE.
  • Assist with the planning and implementation of all state requirements for an Administrative Unit, including the Results Driven Accountability (RDA) process and state compliance indicators.
  • Assist with training and certifying District staff in Safety Care Training techniques.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education: Master’s degree in special education or related field.


Licenses or certifications:

  • Special Education Teaching License or ability to obtain license in the state of Colorado


Minimum Experience:
3 to 5 years of successful, school-based experience. Instructional Coaching or previous experience in a school district Exceptional Student Services department.

Skill Requirements:

  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office
  • Ability to communicate well in English, both speaking and writing (Bilingual Spanish preferable)
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to collaborate with team members
  • Leadership skills that support program objectives
  • Knowledge of Special Education laws and strategies for inclusion.
  • Understanding of the IEP process
  • Experience with special populations
  • Extensive background in literacy instruction and standards
  • Knowledge of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) process
  • Knowledge of progress monitoring tools and techniques
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and evaluate personnel
  • Training and experience in instructional coaching

This position is evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Certified Staff
