Summary:

The ASPCA Veterinarian Fellow will receive excellent practical experience with a high caseload and strong mentorship focused on providing Access to Veterinary Care (AVC) for underserved clients and their pets. Fellows will receive training, sustainable pay and mentorship and this program will prepare them for a career in small animal community medicine or other AVC roles.

Fellows will work alongside senior doctors, who will mentor them in case management and help them achieve surgical, dental, and procedural proficiency. The Fellow will spend time in both the ASPCA Animal Hospital (AAH) and Community Veterinary Centers (CVC) providing subsidized care for animals whose owners are experiencing financial challenges while concentrating on conditions which can be addressed with reasonable resources and have a high likelihood of a positive outcome.

In AAH, the Fellow will have primary case management on a rotational basis in the following areas: treatment room, appointments, soft tissue surgery dentistry, and anti-cruelty and recovery (ARC). In the CVCs, the Fellow will provide preventive and basic medical care including examinations, diagnostics, treatments, minor surgery, and spay/neuter surgery to pet dogs and cats living with their families in ASPCA focus areas and animals in the care of the rescue community in New York. In addition, Fellows may have the option to spend time at our ASPCA Spay/ Neuter Alliance (ASNA) facility in North Carolina learning high quality/high volume spay and neuter techniques (HQHVSN) when available.

The rotating schedule is broken down as follows:

• AAH Appointments: 20%
• AAH Soft-Tissue Surgery: 20%
• ARC Anti-cruelty Recovery: 15%
• Dentistry: 15%
• Community Medicine and HQHVSN: 15%
• AAH Treatments: 15%

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

AAH/ARC (85%)

• Provide high-quality, practical veterinary care to a wide range of outpatients and inpatients, skilled and efficient diagnosis and treatment of outpatients and hospitalized animals within hospital medical parameters and budgetary guidelines.
• Perform general procedures and treatments.
• Learn, perform, and oversee all aspects of soft-tissue surgery and dentals.
• Provide a high level of customer service to external and internal clients.
• Practice in compliance with Fear Free guidelines.
• Perform humane euthanasia in accordance with ASPCA policy and AAH protocols.
• While seeing appointments: Fulfill 30-45-minute appointment turnaround time.
• Within ARC, the Fellow will practice treating the unique medical conditions that arise from cruelty and neglect, such as starvation, severe matting injuries, and blunt force trauma, while gaining experience in population management and infectious disease control.

CVC (15%)

• Provide compassionate high-quality preventive and basic medical care to all patients.
• Oversee all aspects of veterinary care during an outpatient clinic day including physical examination, diagnostics, treatment recommendations and delivery, prescriptions and discharge information.
• Perform pre-surgery physical examinations on all surgical candidates.
• Perform high quality, high volume spay/neuter surgical procedures including pyometra surgeries.
• Diagnose and treat post-surgical medical complications.
• Perform and oversee all aspects of minor surgical procedures amenable to being performed on an outpatient basis.
• Refer and triage cases that do not fall within the Community Medicine parameters of care as appropriate according to One ASPCA Fund (OAF) Coverage Guidelines.
• Perform humane euthanasia in accordance with ASPCA policy and CM protocols.
• Provide support and medical services for clients of Community Engagement (CE) and other ASPCA departments as needed including evaluation of animals living in hoarding situations.

Qualifications:

• Ability to maintain good working relationship with clients and staff, be a team player.
• Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office and ability to use paperless medical records and view online calendar and email.
• English required, additional proficiency in Spanish beneficial.
• Excellent work attendance record and interpersonal skills.
• Interest in animal welfare and population control and serving underserved populations.
• Must possess ability to work independently as well as part of team.
• Must possess ability to work in high-volume, fast-paced clinic environment.

Compensation and Benefits:

Salary for this role is $90,000. Benefits include: Medical, Dental, Vision, Life & Disability, 56 paid vacation, 56 paid sick time, 40 hours personal time, and $2400 in debt relief.
