ADULT DAY / HEALTH CARE AIDE I

General Statement of Duties

Performs variety of assistance duties involved in nursing care and planning and leading activities in the Adult Day / Health Care Center for adults.

Distinguishing Features of the Class

An employee in this class assists clients in the Adult Day / Health Care Center with their personal care needs, leads activities and socialization, provides transportation to and from the center, prepares snacks and assists in feeding.

Work includes completing logs and documentation in the charts and light housekeeping in the center area. Clients have reached a level of functioning that requires daily supervision and assistance.

Duties include providing in-put into planning activities and assisting in determining needs. Work involves maintaining daily records on clients’ activities and behaviors.

Work requires judgment and initiative as well as tact and diplomacy in dealing with clients’ and families. Duties may expose the employee to human body fluids and thus the work is subject to the OSHA requirements for blood borne pathogens.

Work is supervised by the Adult Day / Health Program Director and is reviewed through conferences, review of records and reports, observation, and feedback from clients and families served.

Duties and Responsibilities

Leads clients in various activities (such as bingo, exercise, games, crafts, etc.) in accordance with the daily schedule;

may substitute activities based on observation of clients and their response and level of functioning.

Provides feedback to supervisor on clients’ needs and participates in developing program / activities and in preparing materials;

assists in determining needs daily through interaction and observation.

Assists with planning fieldtrips and making arrangements; assist clients in and out of van as needed.

Assists in preparing snacks following snack schedule; sets up for lunch.

Interacts with family when they bring clients to and pick up from the center; provides an outlet and listens to concerns and problems they are encountering and shares information on client, their progress and try to see how they can help;

share continuing concerns and problems with the supervisor.

Completes daily records on client’s activities and changes in personal care assistance required; records on bathing, diapering and position charts.

A ssists clients with personal needs such as cutting up food and feeding, escorting to the bathroom and changing Depends;

assists with bathing and hand washing; and cleans up accidents.

Drives the van to pick clients up in the mornings and take home at the end of the day and / or to take to medical appointments;

assists clients in and out of van and ensures safely seated.

Responsible for CACFP attendance counts, meal counts, monitoring and ordering supplies and assisting with breakfast, lunch and snack.

Attends required training courses and workshops. Performs light housekeeping duties in the center.

Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities

General knowledge of physical and mental problems and needs of older and disabled adults and how to relate to and effectively handle the resulting functioning and behaviors.

Considerable knowledge of personal care-giving skills for older and disabled adults.

Considerable knowledge of sanitation, safety, and personal hygiene needs of older adults, and skill in performing personal hygiene and related health care assistance tasks..

Working knowledge of activities, methods and practices appropriate for working with older and disabled adults.

Working knowledge of and ability to operate a computer, and aility to read, write and communicate effectively with clients and families.

Ability to plan and lead activities appropriate to the level of functioning for older adults.

Skills in listening and interacting with family and other caregivers and providing a support base.

Ability to maintain complete and accurate records and reports.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of stooping, kneeling, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, and hearing.

Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and / or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and / or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift objects.

Must possess the visual acuity to make visual inspections of center conditions and to assure conditions are safe and orderly, to operate a computer, to read extensively, and to assemble parts such as crafts, etc. close to the eyes.

Education and Experience

Graduation from high school and some experience in working with older adults with physical and mental problems; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Current Nurse Aide 1 certification.

Special Requirements

Willingness to successfully complete CPR and First Aid training, and to successfully complete on-going in-service training.

Willingness and ability to successfully complete required certification by the State in developmental disabilities.

Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
