Ascend Nonprofit Solutions is Hiring an Ada Jenkins Center - LEARN Works Instructor Near Davidson, NC

Position Title: LEARN Works Instructor
Reports to: Assistant Director of Education Services
Classification: Non-exempt
Category: Part-time, seasonal
(In-Person, Monday-Friday from 2-6:30pm, from mid-Aug. through mid-May, occasional extended shift)
Job Summary: Under the general direction of the Assistant Director of Education Services as well as in accordance with the mission of the Ada Jenkins Center and purpose of the LEARN Works Program, the LEARN Works Instructor will be directly responsible for supporting the reading progress, the academic enrichment of a group of elementary aged students using explicit instruction, and for providing strong, caring supervision of students at all times.
Job Qualifications
  • Minimally one year certificate from college or technical school; or six months to a year of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. At least 2 years of experience working with elementary school students preferred.
  • Must already be familiar with or willing to learn and employ the program's philosophy utilizing Love and Logic principles in working children and families.
  • Prior experience working with volunteers preferred.
  • Computer proficient in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel.
  • Comfortable with conducting online instruction and familiar with Google apps preferred.
  • CPR and First Aid Certified. If not currently certified at the time of hire, certification can be acquired shortly after.

Principle FunctionsDevelop elementary students academically:
  • Reading Support: Create and implement lessons for groups of students utilizing determined curriculum(s) and explicit instruction, coach students in whole group, small groups, pairs and/or individually about the use of reading strategies, work with the director, trainers and other staff members to learn to use strategies/activities to provide for consistent instruction for students, use multisensory approaches to adapt to students learning styles, monitor the progress of each student on an ongoing basis, provide students with consistent feedback about progress and achievement, provide feedback to parents about the progress of their student at determined intervals or as requested.
  • Math Support: During homework start time, include math homework and the support of needed math skill building.
Coordinate Enrichment Programming
  • Coordinate and implement enrichment activities to enhance academic instruction and provide opportunities for real life application of skills.
  • Collaborate with the Enrichment Assistant for guest speakers, field trips, and other enrichment opportunities for the students of your class.
  • Ensure students complete evaluation or assessments as needed.
Manage Classrooms And Develop Students' Social SkillsModel student expectations and the Love and Logic philosophy for program participants.
Ensure the Love and Logic philosophy is consistently applied in classroom and other settings.
  • Identify students in need of extra support for social skill development implementing strategies designed to promote the students' abilities to make good choices.
  • Provide participants with encouragement about their personal growth and development.
  • Establish routines and procedures for the classroom that maintain a safe, positive learning climate for participants.
  • Set and model the tone for your classroom to foster a conducive environment for learning and participation.
Complete Administrative/Routine Tasks
  • Complete communications and efforts in the Afterschool 201 database.
  • Complete weekly lesson plans.
  • Enter students' assessment scores in the Afterschool 201 database.
  • Submit monthly success stories in Afterschool 201 database.
  • Participate in evaluation process for students and volunteers.
Manage Personal Growth
  • Attend training sessions as required.
  • Participate in observations and coaching check-ins.
  • Establish performance goals, performance mid-year check-ins, and self and supervisor annual performance appraisals.
  • Participate in the development of the program.
  • Attend team meetings.
  • Communicate with supervisor and colleagues about needs and concerns.
Establish a Relationship, Communicate, And Collaborate With Partners
  • Parents: Establish a relationship with each parent, communicate regularly with parents via phone calls, email, in-person, or the childcare management software, keep parents informed of their student's progress, attend parent workshops scheduled during the school year, conduct parent conferences with parents on scheduled dates during the school year and as other needs arise.
  • Volunteers: Establish a relationship with volunteers assigned to classroom, effectively use volunteers assigned to your classroom by incorporating them in your whole group instruction and placing them with small groups or pairs of students as appropriate, guide the work of volunteers by providing them with direction and encourage input during daily briefings and debriefings, monitor relationships between volunteers and students, and provide supervision of volunteers and feedback to volunteers. Participate in volunteer appreciation events.
  • School teachers: Communicate monthly with your students' school teachers. Make school teachers aware when students exit the LEARN Works program.
