Aroostook County Action Program is Hiring a Health Assistant Near Presque Isle, ME

Description

This position is a 12-month, year-round position.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Health Assistant assists in ensuring health services (medical and dental) are provided in accordance with program requirements and regulations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Performs health related screenings under supervision of the Program Manager and ensures that needed follow-up is completed; performs health related sensory screenings such as: auditory and visual; growth and development screenings such as: height and weight; and general health screenings. Screenings are completed on children within 45 days of enrollment using appropriate screening tools; records physical and dental reports on all enrolled children.
  2. Contacts health and dental provider offices to obtain necessary reports; contacts parents/guardians regarding needed releases; contacts medical/dental offices for medical reports to ensure completion of preventative health appointments; follows up with parents/guardians regarding overdue health appointments/screenings/immunizations.
  3. Assists with orientation; assists families with completion of Health History forms; follows up with parents, medical providers, etc., to ensure all health-related orientation materials are on file.
  4. Maintains electronic health record of all enrolled children.. 
  5. Participates in continuous improvement efforts that ensure program quality; follows all Head Start, NAEYC, and Maine State childcare licensing regulations.

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Performs additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS NEEDED FOR POSITION:

Experience and Skill Requirements: The following experience and skill requirements are considered essential:

Experience:

  • 1-2 years of prior experience in a medical/clinical or office setting
  • Performing lab tests, preferred
  • Crisis intervention and management
  • Skills:
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent listening skills
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Excellent recordkeeping skills
  • Use Microsoft Office applications and other computer software as applicable to the position.
  • Communicate with and relate to young children
  • Work with a diverse population 
  • Work independently 

Education and Knowledge Requirements: The following education and knowledge requirements are considered essential:

  • High School Diploma or the equivalent
  • Training or course work in medical or health field preferred
  • Visual and auditory screening and health requirements for children 
  • First Aid and CPR Certification

Other Requirements: Additional requirements that are considered essential:

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule
  • Must pass required background checks
  • Must hold current C.H.R.C.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and provide proof of insurance

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel, including operation of a standard computer keyboard; reach with hands and arms and talk, see and hear; prolonged standing is required. Eye hand coordination and manual dexterity required. The employee must regularly lift/move up to 25 pounds, including assisting with moving patients, as well as bend, stoop, stretch or crouch. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work is performed in office or classroom environments. Noise level is moderate. Frequent local and occasional long-distance travel may be required, sometimes in inclement weather. There may be frequent exposure to hazardous and infectious materials, including blood borne pathogens.
